Why The Tegra Chip is so Powerful

June 17, 2009 by ACE

So you’ve been hearing the ZuneHD has this ‘Tegra’ chip but what does that mean? What’s it do that other processors can’t? What’s the big deal? Well, let me explain with the help of Youtube:

For starters, the Tegra chip sips power while at the same time doing extremely powerful things. How is this acheived? A fundamental change from conventional processor architecture. It has 8 independent processors that each work to reduce the amount of power needed only WHEN needed. Watch below:

And what does that mean for you? How about instead of 25 hours worth of music on a single battery charge, you get 25 DAYS worth of playback? How about watch up to 5 of your favorite movies in HD on a single charge? Watch below:

+
“Tegra-Days of Battery Life” via YouTube

The final video below is quite lengthy, but does show how the Tegra chip can fully support flash on internet browsers as well as HD playback without skipping a beat, and well under a watt of power each time.

So there you have it. This thing is pretty awesome! Imagine asking your friend who has an iPod Touch how long his battery lasts and letting him know your ZuneHD lasts for days longer than his ‘hours’!

Oh, and here’s a demonstration of how games could be rendered. Of course there will be no camera on the ZuneHD, but this shows the rendering and computing power of the Tegra chip. [Thanks Zalcron!]

Tegra is a SOC with an ARM11 CPU and a GPU with the capabilities of a Geforece 2 / Geforce 3 graphics cards made by nVidia at the beginning of this decade.

One thing to notice at the end of the Tegra Functionality video there is a demo of a Window CE Kernel being shown off (this would be shelled by the Zune HD multi-touch interface). I think that confirms it use more than anything else nVidia could have shown - this made me think of the Zune HD more than anything else, due to the version of IE being the same there (shown viewing web pages) plus this will support Flash natively so you could get Flash video on the device (and hopefully use extensions on the processor to support Silverlight too!).
Some device I know does not support flash at all, even for YouTube, wonder what that was again...

Haha, the 120 does get 25 hours (I actually tested it out), but if you listen to it in intervals (i.e. listen to it for 2 hours, turn it off, listen to it for 2 hours, turn it off, and so on) it's more like 6-7 hours. After almost three years, I've finally realized that the Zune is in fact a ****ty mp3 player.

every battery is like that. every time you charge a battery you get a little bit less battery time. especially if you charge it before its completely dead. especially considering 3 years. you are the quickest to judge. and turning on the devise actually takes more power than leaving it on.

im a little confused about that last game there with the camera. how does it even work and will we see anything like that on the zunehd?

some people.
Well obviously after 3 years the battery is gonna be ****, but I just got this one a couple months ago

I guess what you're saying makes sense, somewhat, but from 24 hours to 6 hours? That seems like a ripoff to me.

if you dont like it, dont buy it. we like zune, you dont have to. maybe you got a lemon because i got my zune 4 a few months ago and the battery in it is fine. but keep in mind that every time you charge it when its not fully dead, and every time you start to charge it and take it off early makes the battery last less. like every time you put music on it and take it off early.

free?

As for the Tegra, I'm hoping for some exciting things coming this fall. Good battery life + excellent graphics is a definite WIN.

Nvidia?s Tegra has hardly hit any devices yet, but their General Manager is already talking about the future of the processor, with chips being planned for 2010 which have 4 times the performance of current devices, while maintaining the same low power as current generation devices

That's the price of technology and no device is imune to it - you will eventually not be able to hold a charge on any battery. So how then would you say it's a ripoff?
