This has to be treated with extreme scepticism at the
moment, but Beforeview has just reported what “may” be the first meaty details
about Microsoft’s Zune 2Go mp3 player that will compete with products such as
the iPod Shuffle. They claim to have seen an early prototype. The report has no pictures, and I am left with a highly
dubious feeling after reading it, but I felt I had to share just in case. But even
if it turns out to be a fake preview, it still causes interesting debate about
what Microsoft’s micro Zune is actually going to be like.
According to their description, it’s basically an SD card
with mp3 playing capabilities, meaning it can be plugged into any SD slot on a
computer. There are two parts to the player, the SD type bit and then a sleeve
with headphones attached that the SD bit slots in and out of.
“There is no ON or OFF switch. If player is in the sleeve,
it plays! Sleeve is very small in size, much smaller than iPod Shuffle.”
Not only that, but according to Beforeview’s report Microsoft
will set up 5000 Zune 2Go stations for people to refresh it with random tracks
(based on your Zune profile).
Smaller than the shuffle? The size of an SD card? Zune 2Go
stations? Sounds a pretty radical product that people will either love or hate. I for one think it sounds cool if it's carried off, but if it only switches on when the 2 parts are connected, seems like it might be easy to lose one or the other.
