cooltechzone.com In a recent special report from CoolTechZone.com, Gundeep Hora got some interesting insights from Microsoft reps at CES 2008.  The article covers how Zune is becoming more of what the press originally branded it - an iPod killer, but near the end, he gives some hints as to what what may be in store for Zune in 2008.  Read on...
As surprising as it is, at CES 2008, Microsoft's Zune is really starting to emerge as a serious threat to Apple's crown jewel. Sure, it's not going to capture the market rapidly and growth will be gradual, but Microsoft has the right ingredients.

Says Hora .  He goes on to compare how the initial reaction to the Xbox and where it is today mirrors that of Zune.  Then he begins to talk about his impressions of what the representatives from Microsoft were saying.

After interviewing with Zune reps at CES, we got the same sense of ongoing developments and a long-term strategy from them....they will continue to update it with incremental feature updates once every quarter. These will be "soft" upgrades....and Microsoft acknowledged it might let users create their own designs (Zune Originals?), upload them and have them printed and shipped accordingly. It doesn't get any better than this....It can only get better for Microsoft from this point forward, or at least we hope.

While it's unsure as to who he talked to, or how valid this information is, suffice it to say it's intriguing none-the-less.

As always, we here at zB will continue to bring you latest in Zune-related information!

I for one love the idea of uploading your design for them to put on the zune, I know I would make a killing designing art for people. I say go for it MS.
they should make an effort to put some of the features from v1 marketplace in
this version, need the ability to drag and drop album art and a whole lot more stuff

Zune will NEVER be a serious competitor/platform until they open it up for use with Amazon Unbox and Audible.

well Amazon Unbox is a service for DRM free mp3s and will work with the zune. I also don't think that MS is loosing much marketshare because of audible. Regardless its better to take things slowly and do it right than to rush a bad product.

The zune marketplace also supplies DRM free mp3s so...

Actually, Audible is a big deal for some. I am acutally buying a Zune 30 (will be my second one) from a Co-Worker just because it does not play Audible. He bought a Zune from Woot when it was $85 but could not get past the lack of Audible support and refused to go thur conversion to play them on a Zune.

If MS can get Audible support and an eBook reader or PDF reader, it will crush the iPod.

The Zune will NEVER compete with the iPod until it gets (1) better advertizing campaigns, (2) a F***ING CLOCK, and (3) games.

Until then Zune is DX

Well, as long as they continue to issue updates for the firmware, theres a greater chance at finding a flaw, and then we could get customizable firmware. Wee. I dream for the day!

Wouldn't it be interesting if you could create the color of your Zune original on a pallet, along with your custom drawings.

didn't they say games by like june or july?
and a clock,e book reader or heck even what BrianLikesZune said custamisable firmware would be use full and cool.
still ZUNE ROCK'S.

All I'm looking for is a clock and getting rid of the gap between songs. I've always been a guy who listens to albums front to back, and the little studder is bugging the hell out of me. I'm considering getting an iPod just because of that. I want my mp3 player to replace my CD player, not make me want it back.
The upload thing could be expensive and hard to pull off. But it'd definately be cool.

I have a Zune... and I must agree that it needs a clock and foreign language support...
NightFire   | 75.36.19.xxx | 2008-01-21 14:38:39
I honestly don't see a point to a clock, though I always use a watch and have a cellphone on me and those two both have a clock and I use my cell as my alarmclock. But ehh, maybe that's just me.
McFizz - ehh   | 71.100.144.xxx | 2008-01-21 17:09:14
clock, manual eq, more audio and video support, eboook reader, games, gapless audio, ability to create folders.

It needs an equalizer!!!!
Smudge - zune needs an editor   | 207.200.116.xxx | 2008-01-27 12:10:16
If the wiz kids want to do something nice. They should put an editor in zune like they had in V. 1.1. Another nice thougth would be to put an print option on the list page so you could print out what you have on there.
