Known game retailer, GameStop, has said it will stop selling Zunes once the current inventory is sold. "We have decided to exit the Zune category because it just did not have the appeal we had anticipated," said a GameStop spokesperson. You would think something like this would go relatively unnoticed, but it seems a ton of articles have reported this news (see HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE to name a few *rolls eyes*) Is GameStop out of their minds?
With the recent release of the 2.5 Update, Zune to be released in Canada come June 13th, and games officially to be released for the Zune (unofficially HERE at ZuneBoards), it's very apparent Zune is not going anywhere soon (contrary to what has been reported). So with an increase in potential, why has GameStop decided to make this decision, and how has Microsoft responded? More after the break.
You would think GameStop would have heard the news of Zune adding games to its platform, no doubt adding to its appeal. It's unfortunate that they have lost faith so early in the game. It takes years for products to achieve the appeal, and GameStop obviously doesn't have the patience. But a move like this would make sense when looking at the company's performance. With a slowing economy, shares of GameStop were down $3.15, or 6.2%, to $47.72 following in-line guidance for the current quarter and fiscal year. No doubt, the company's trying to shore up profitability against a tough tech market these days. It seems Microsoft is unphased by the decision.
Micrsoft has responded to GameStop's news:
"We have a set of great partnerships that give Zune a strong presence at retail including Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart and others," said Adam Sohn, director of marketing for Zune.
It seems GameStop is living up to its name with Zune getting games soon. They're going to miss out and the games will truly stop for them in terms of Zune. Don't worry Zune fans. There's far more road ahead and GameStop is just a bump in the road.
