Microsoft Insists Zune is Fine

January 27, 2009 by ACE

The Zune is not going away. For the second time this month Adam Sohn, the Zune’s director of marketing, has gone on the defensive on wild speculation that the Zune’s days are numbered and even says there are NEW Zunes on the way this year!

…….."Every time anything comes up, there is a set of people who pull a Chicken Little and say, ‘The Sky is Falling. Zune is dead,’ " he said. "The fact is we are on track to deliver the next generation of Zune innovation in software and hardware."

"The planning is fast and furious," he said. "We will deliver progress this calendar year."

He attributes the drop in sales of Zune devices to nothing more than a market-driven down-turn coupled with Zune’s limited availability (in North America Only).

Well, this is exactly what we thought, and Sohn does mention that the PDMP category is shrinking so as expected, he’s forshadowing the migration of Zune to other platforms.

Meh. He's a public relations flack; of course he's going to say that everything's fine and going as planned.

To listen to their CEOs, everything was fine at Bear Stearns, Goldman Sachs and Washington Mutual...up until their very respective weekends where they weren't fine and they went belly up. Well, Goldman Sachs became a bank holding company instead, but you get my point.

The rumors are many and not ALL may be accurate, but I'm sure there are nuggets of truth to them.

lol why buy zune 80 when zune 120 is out?
zune 80 is almost the same price if you buy msrp pricing.. and no one can say it is true or not that zune will continue...

Isn't this usually the first step of doom for something that will soon be disappearing? I love my Zune, but when I hear announcements like these, it just makes me cringe. And am I the only one who is wondering why Microsoft didn't pony up for a Superbowl ad? A Zune Superbowl ad would have done wonders, in my humble opinion which I already voiced elsewhere on this board.

True on the Superbowl adds. Everyone is tightening up their belts but i think they have the money and NEED to step it up. They also need to get some other manufactures on board as far as home/car audio goes. ipud has a ton of stuff and I can not find one car deck that has full Zune intergration.

I don't expect Zune to go away, it's the only real contender to the iPod and is something different, which many people want.

zune

so what now, what's expected form zune now that if i'm not mistaken from the reading above that there "Will be new Zune's to be launched this year" hope its something with more processing power than the other zune's. i would say anything except a touch screen this year they should wait until next year to get all of the software/firmware straitened out, don;t want to end up like apple w/there servers over loaded

More processing power? The Zune 30 had like a 400 mhz chip, the Zune second and third gen has like 300-something mhz. What more processing power could you want? It's already as (if not more) powerful than any iPod on the market, the iPod Nano 3rd gen (the wide little fat one, not the Zune 8/16 rip) had a 130 mhz processor over clocked to 200 mhz if memory serves. Any more processor power and your battery life will be sucked down to about an hour.
