Urge.com to close

August 21, 2007 by ACE

A little after a one year partnership between Microsoft and MTV, who teamed up to bring us Urge.com to Windows Media Player 11, the two are going their own separate ways.

MTV is to announce in a press conference today that they will be merging with RealNetworks’ Rhapsody music service and closing Urge.com.

Microsoft is going to continue to support Zune instead.

Many contribute the breakup to Microsoft’s lessening support for PlayForSure, the old-school DRM, which was the basis of Urge’s digital downloads. Microsoft is now turning its attention to improvements in Zune with new models and features expected this holiday season.

Could this mean Zune to be supported by Windows Media Player in the future?

We all shall see…

One of the Best things that could happen to the Zune is the MS allows it to be used under WMP11, there's no reason the Marketplace could'nt take Urge's spot

You know what's crazy is, what if all those Urge Customers (like all 2 of them) have all this music, but once the service goes away, will be SOL and won't be able to sync them to their MP3 players...
Wonder if Microsoft will give them Zunes for free since they're doing away with the PlayForSure DRM...?

I doubt it, Microsoft probably has their Terms Of Service backing them up. Like "Microsoft may terminate the service anytime for any reason".

So what does this mean for the Zune Marketplace? Will MS have to make a new marketplace from scratch now? Will they be able to keep the ZM even though MTV is going to Real? I love the idea of having the ZM built into Windows Media Player 11 because that's my default player on my computer.
