i know, late reply, but is zune 4/8 as tanky as zune 80/30? cause when people's saying tank they're mostly talking about zune 80/30

I'm not even sure about the 80's, but I do know that the 30's are beast. Mine's been running fine for over 17 months now!

Not always. The 2nd gen Zune is made to have better looks, and the touch pad. The first gen is supposed to be more reliable.

Same thing happened with the Xbox :P

I've had my zune 30GB for some months now, I have a Black speaker case I use with mine from Sonic Impact, My Daughter has tride slobbering all over the speakers, she has tried eating it ( just the zune) ... And I've dropped it at least 15 times .... I've thrown it down at least twice in anger.... sorry guys I know I shouldn't throw a zune in anger real mature yeah I know.. well anyway once it started having trouble reading files, but I reformatted the drive and it has since worked perfectly fine.

Wow. I'm a believer. I was carrying my 1st gen 30GB zune into another room while watching a video and got the earbud cable caught on the doorknob. That ripped the earbuds from my ears and the Zune out of my hands. It hit the floor on its corner from about four feet and then landed on the screen side of the unit. I was petrified. But the Zune didn't have a scratch on it and the video didn't even stop playing.

Color me amazed.

Unfortunately, the 2nd-gen Zunes don't seem to be as sturdy, from what I hear. My own Zune 80 died, though I think it was from a firmware bug or something rather than "blunt-force trauma" to quote Law and Order. *Dun Dun*

maybe someday soon, we'll see a surge in sales of 1st gen zunes for their stability... besides, need an 80GB version? take it apart and buy an 80GB drive that's compatible, and insert it... voila!! its an 80GB first gen.

My first Zune was dropped onto raw parking-lot concrete and suffered no scratches whatsoever, and I have excellent vision. My second one was purchased second-hand. It had a very interesting history: bought in 2006, dropped at least 9 times at 4 feet and above, and finally came to a stop when the firmware needed to be reset. Without a doubt, Zune30 is definitely a tank. (It's still running fine by the way, just that videos freeze once in a while)

LOL... you mean I dropped my zune 30 onto a raw parking lot. Your 2nd zune was purchased from me for free. Your 2nd zune was 3rd hand. Somebody else gave me a broken zune and then i gave it to you.

I think its official: the reason zunes were given to the US military, because, Like Timex, they take a lickin' and kept on ticking... or playing ... whatever... but that's freaking awesome. ON TOP OF ALL THAT, The Zune 30GB has a hard drive and that doesn't make it very sensitive to damaging... anyone ever notice how hard it is to F*** up the zune's screen? I mean, don't try to break it, but seriously, its not the easiest tool / toy to harm.

Yea my zune has survived from 2006-2008 as well
only a few scratches and nothing really bad, except lately, it seems my zune has been chipped in a couple spots, probably due to the careless handling of it by my brother
The zune to me seems like the strongest mp3 player out there, when i had my zen :M, i put it in that pouch it came with it, and in a few seconds had scratches all over
