Why did you choose the Zune over the iPod?

Prior to this I lacked any mp3 player...

Reasons:

1. Screen Size.

2. I loathe and despise apple.

3. Horror stories of shattering iPods.

4. Being different.

5. Physical Atributes. (Looks and feels like it's worth $250)

Had a Video, but scratched it to hell, so I bought a Nano. My Nano ran out of space, plus it was too damn physically small, so I wandered back to the electronics department at work one day and saw Zunes were on sale. NO brainer.

-I needed an MP3 player for the gym.
-I usually don't like anything that's "mainstream".
-I haven't liked anything Apple in a long time.
-LOVE the brown. Very different.
-Like the look better than Ipod.
-I wanted a video MP3 player so I figured getting the bigger screen was just the thing to do.
-The name/logo is cool.
-I used Itunes for a while because my one of my friends is an Apple funboy and told me how awesome it was and blew WMP out of the water... He was wrong. I can't stand Itunes. Don't like the look of it at all.

The other reasons are the screen size and sound quality it has(with good headphones) but the biggest part is I needed something different. All I ever see is those damn Ipods (It's invasion I tell you) WOOT!! I love my zune!!

I didn't.
I had an Ipod Nano.
First gen.
It decided to stop working a few weeks after the warrenty was up.
So, I got a Zune.
Thankfully, my friend had one and he let me play with his.
Loved it.

I got mine cause i was upgrading from my creative mp3, i hate apple and love microsoft. Found out zune was made by microsoft and was amazed they finally did something about the ipod faze. I love the screen size just about everything else it has to offer and will offer in the future. Some day zune will wipe out ipod and i can't wait.

Well, I had an iPod Nano (1st Gen, 4Gb) for around a year when we started hearing rumours about Microsoft entering the market, obviously, I was a tad excited.

Saw the device and read the spec and realised that - considering they're the same price, this was just better than anything Apple had on show.

Slightly downhearted when they only launched in the US, I decided id import one anyway - and I was probably one of the first people in the UK to get one, think I recieved it about a week after US release. Ironically, importing a Zune with the exchange rate at the time, still turned out significantly cheaper than buying a new iPod over here - im planning to import a 8Gb Draco when they hit, and now the exchange rate is even better, im ready to make a killing :P

Anyway. I am a fan of Microsoft, being a techie and using Microsoft software day-in day-out, writing my own applications to customize etc, you get used to some of it's quirks and often find out how to fix them. I don't think you can truly appreciate and understand why Microsoft software has security holes etc unless you are a developer. Some mistakes they made over a decade ago have meant that now - after they've broken the 100 million lines of code in Windows Vista - they're next to impossible to undo, unless someone wants to trawl through all that ****.

Anyway im rambling.

I also want to work for Microsoft in the future, so even if the Zune is discontinued in a few years when I try to apply, walking in with one is bound to score me some points lol.

I wanted a 30gb MP3 player. I was seriously considering an Ipod but needed to save up. Then woot.com had a Zune for $149 and I couldn't resist. I am soooo glad I did because I didn't really want an Ipod. I don't care for Apple products. Plus I have heard all sorts of bad things about IPod and I am so glad I didn't get it!!

I picked Zune over iPod mainly because I'm pretty sure I could use it as a self-defense brick and chuck it and someone's forehead and then still have it work fine. I'm pretty sure I can't do that with the iPod.

I don't know why I bought my Zune. I love it, I just don't know why I would buy it when I already have a world class but not perfect player (Creative Zen Vision:M).

I first got the itch when woot offered it for $150. Woot's web page stared at me... taunting me... daring me NOT to buy it. I resisted. I didn't buy it. The next morning I felt a sense of regret... for letting it go for $150. Especially when 6 months earlier I dropped $110 on Woot for a Dreameo Enza. The regret grew for the remainder of the day... and it was then that I vowed that if woot should offer it again for $150, I would jump on it.

A few days passed... surprise, a woot-off! I telecommute, so I have my office notebook chugging away at work things, while my personal system is right next to it monitoring up-to-the-minute changes on the woot-off. Just when I thought it was going to be another mildly interesting woot-off, there it appeared... a white Zune for $150.

Not knowing how long inventory would last during the woot-off, I quickly go through the checkout and secure one... yesssss!

It felt like an eternity for it to arrive. But it finally did. I patiently unbox it... admiring the classy packaging that MS had assembled for it. It looks like the packaging for a $500 electronic gadget.

After a false alarm of thinking that the device was DOA (it was a usb port current issue), it springs to life and I get it all charged up and synced.

I'm no stranger to gadgets... I get pretty much whatever I feel like when I feel like... PDAs, smartphones, PMPs, whatever. So I was surprised at just how much I like the Zune. Especially considering that feature-for-feature it does not compare favorably against the ZVM. It only supports 2 audio codecs (no biggie, I use MP3 anyways) and only 1 video codec (WMV). And no choice of desktop software to use... it's gotta be Zune.

But the Zune has a great case. It has a large screen (video in a portable is equally important to me as audio). It has a simple but effective button scheme. It has a familiar "Portable Media Center" interface. The rectangular shape and dimensions make it "feel" thinner and smaller than the ZVM. It can output to a TV with nothing extra than a standard iPod video cable (fyi, reverse the audio left-right connections)... no special dock or dongle required. And accessories are dirt cheap... I picked up an AC adapter for $1, a AA battery extender for $0.50, and a leather case w/belt clip for $5.

People complain that 30GB is miniscule, especially for a device that can do video. And if this were an iPod with its inefficient video codec, I would agree. But I've got plenty of experience encoding .wmv files... and I know that the format is highly efficient for very low bitrates. My first video test: Rip my DVD of Dawn of the Dead (1978) to wmv. Took a little over 2 hours. The resulting file of this 2+ hour movie is less than 500MB.

Sync the file and play it..... awesome! The video quality is ever so slightly grainy compared to the ZVM. But it is barely perceptible and due to the lower pixel density. Both the ZVM and Zune have 320x240 screens but the Zune is approx. 33% larger so since the ZVM's pixels are packed tighter, the image looks sharper.

My media players are important to me on my trips. When I fly cross-country, the 6 hour plane ride can be torture. I've only had my Zune for a few days, but I have already decided that I will be taking it with me on my next trip in a few weeks.

The Zune isn't perfect. There are plenty of additions that I'd like to see made. But I think that the sometimes harsh criticism of it is unwarranted. It is a very well made device that does what it does with minimal fanfare and fuss.

i hate apple and the ipod i really hate itunes i saw the halo 3 zune for preorder i had to have it preordered it and had it shipped here to afganistan where i am currently defending someones freedoms somewhere

I have an Ipod atm.. but I started my job today. and I'm saving up to buy a zune. and I'm probably gonna give away my Ipod to my dad or something my Ipod is 30 and the zune is better so I figured its time for an upgrade to a trusted company.. Microsoft. apple is a monopoly. they suck. getting a mac you pretty much ****ed your self over.

Didn’t like the click wheel on the iPod, too much people have iPods, I wanted to be different, and the U.I is way better than the Ipod ...bigger screen.
