Well, I have an iPod touch, an iPhone, a vast collection of Nanos, two minis and some first gen iPods - both from the days before and when they first introduced the clickwheel, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that most of the time, it's down to preference, but the iPod has degraded in build quality as they've developed the hardware - but then, you can say that of most the apple products these days. I find for the most part, the access time on my iPods are alot faster, but that's something I don't mind so much when it comes to the zune, because it handles bass notes, for example, a lot better than say the 3rd gen iPod - Comparing the two on the basis of my sennheiser CX300 earbuds, the sound on the zune is a lot warmer, whereas playing the same track through my touch, for example, at the same volume level, the sound is a lot tinnier, and is prone to breaking up as it gets louder (the track I'm using as a basis for comparison here, is U2 - Vertigo).
The Screen It's kind of difficult to say - the screen on the iPod (at least the ones with colour screens) do have a lot going for them, but the thing about LCD screens currently is that as they're miniaturised, there really is only so far you can take the resolution anyway - In all honesty, a lot of people say there's a difference in the Zune and iPod screens apart from size, but I'd say the most noticable aspect of the builds is the durablity - I'm less afraid to have the odd splash of rainwater on my zune, it's more hardwearing, whereas my iPods are all insured so that on the off chance that the screens do break while I'm out and about, it won't cost me an arm and a leg to replace them through apple. That doesn't even enter as a consideration with the zune. The Software Let's face it - iTunes sucks giant inhuman balls when it comes to the PC. It takes far too many resources, screws up your library and basically tries to dictate organisation to you rather than the other way around. AAC is also a bag of nails, which is what your iPod would dearly love you to convert your library to. Go native with an apple product on a pc? I think perhaps not. It works great on a mac, which is solely where my iPods dock now, but for anything microsoft based? not so much, which is pretty freakin hypocritical of apple if you think about it, when you consider that this is the company that cried foul and accused microsoft of backing people into a corner so you had to use their software. The zune however, works with WMP11, in fact I have an option of using either my WMP11 or Zune software to update the music, and it doesn't bat an eyelid, the pure array of audio codecs that the Zune can recognise is also truly awesome. I will say though, it is a shame that microsoft haven't developed the software for mac users to use natively, but then, I suppose the argument is that with the advent of boot camp for macintel computers, the need to just isn't there. ![]() |

Well for one thing, I have a friend who had an iPod and worked well until the warranty stopped. The day after, it died, so that's not a good thing.
And for one thing, it's so boring. The design of the iPod is starting to get boring and so is the interface. The software (iTunes) isn't even that pretty and is real annoying. I used my friend's once (of course I don't have it) and most of her songs wouldn't play because they were moved to another folder =__= The Zune's interface changes at least and in a big way. The only thing iPod changed about their interface was the split screen and cover flow. =__= The music quality on the iPod isn't really the best. I'd say the Zune sounds a bit better. ![]() ![]() |

I had a 1st gen iPod, then they added some things, then i had to buy a 2nd gen iPod to get the new things, then they added video, then i had to buy a 3rd gen iPod to get the video.
I got a Zune, then Zune 2 came out with Podcasts/social and MS put all the new features on my classic Zune. Need I say more..?

I have a Zune 30 and iPod Nano 8gb. The sound quality on the Zune is so much better. I've had the Zune for several months but have not had a chance to explore resources to get familiar with it. I found out about this site from a podcast.

I like the quality of the games on the iPod, but other than that the Zune has it beat, bigger screen, ease of use, better software, better support, FM radio, and more. And plus the games will be just as good once it's all official.

OK, here's the thing that bugs the living crap out of me. I really don't get what the point is of having a music player that plays games in the first place - iPod games tend to be mediocre anyway, but the fact is that if you have an iPod or Zune, you're more than likely to have a PSP or nintendo DS (or both) anyway.

It's just a little extra, that's all. I don't count them being a decision maker for a player, but if you can have them, why not?
