my friend got one of those 14 zune pass trials, and he thinks he can remove the drm and keep the songs just by moving them out of the zune folder. this seems too easy, but the songs he did move out no longer have a license. Is it really that easy? Sounds like it wouldn't work to me.
You just told someone about illegal activity.... and how to do it.....
the drm is 0s and 1s, this ain't a Mac, it isn't powered by fairies. moving a file does not alter it's contents. But yes, there is ways to remove the drm, the .mp3 format has built-in drm features.

thx Jorvette!
Well, I already knew you can remove the drm with software *not that i have done so*, I just was skeptical that you could just move the files out of the zune folder. My friend is in for a rude awakening in 5 days when his trial pass expires then

Yes, he will be. Please be there when it happens, so you can comment on his facial expressions when the realization sets in.
hmmm, he might have left an important piece of information out of this procedure. Just moving DRM'd files will not remove the DRM for you - either the activation server hasn't updated his local license info (yet), or he's doing something extra to rip out the DRM.
The DRM is in the media file itself, so moving it would have no effect. I agree with Roe, there must be something he's not telling you. Maybe he's trying to pull the wool over your eyes so HE can look at your face in disbelief when you try the same and it doesn't work.
Well, he lives with me, so tricking me would be a little harder than usual. He actually showed me what he was doing - he moved the files, and then looked at the song properties and after he moved the song the license was gone...

This is not possible by just moving the files in the normal fashion - trust me, there are many blogs / articles that talk about DRM ripping. If it were this easy, everyone would be doing it and it would be well documented.
If the DRM is, in fact, being stripped out after he moves them, there has to be some extra process going on. Is he moving via Windows Explorer, or is he moving them via a tool called "FairUse4WM"? Also, is this XP?
He literally just dragged them out of the subscription folder into a new one in windows explorer. No extra programs. This is a vista laptop, brand new, so it's got whatever version of WMP11 that comes on those...

If you have the time, do this:
- Check that a file actually has DRM, in the subscription folder. You can go into the file properties, and then the summary tab. "Protected" should say "Yes".
- Have him move that file you checked. Then, check the moved file the same way, to see if "Protected" now says "No".
If this works, then I have no explanation at all. He must have some magic pixie dust in his laptop. DRM ripping is not supposed to work in Vista.
