try doing it without taking out the battery please. People might not be as careful as you.
Well that is the only way they can fix it so they had better be careful. However they could try to plug it in when the battery is completely dead and stare at it until the load screen pops up then they can try the button combination. that may work.

When you want to add stuff, just click edit. it was where you posted double.
Urmm.. just wait for the battery to die. When it dies just press play to bring it back to life untill it really dies. No more battery sign or anything. Plug it up and when it connects loads hold back center + left.
1) so, when i press "play" and the battery signal with the exclamation point lights, the battery is not dead?
2) how long does it take for the battery to go completely dead? it seems like my zune set around for days once and still i got the battery/ exclamation point.
3) i'm not sure my grandma could figure this thing out at all. again, does a zune owner have to be a technical wizard, because it sure looks like it to me
4) when the zune gets plugged in after the battery is totally dead, all i get is a battery charging signal. it does not "connect"
My Zune is still frozen. I don't really feel comfortable taking the battery out to fix this problem.
What exactly can I do besides complain loudly and often?
Please note my "infraction" for double posting. I have no idea what that means either.
Do you have to be a tech wizard to own a Zune? It seems like this is what I am learning.
Do what charge said but know that when you press back center and left that will erase everything including your firmware. Just so you know. If you dont feel comfortable with opening then I suggest you dont. I just posted that for people who are past their warranties and have already opened them before my post.

God, I'm sure you have to be a tech wizard now!
so, now i have erased everything on my zune... by the way, it is STILL frozen after doing this.
unbelievable.
i guess it doesn't matter, who would want a zune? my money was wasted for the last time on microsoft, i must say.

Yes your battery still has some life which is why i took it apart and detached the battery connector from the circuit board.
idk how long it takes to go completely dead but there were plenty of people that woke up this morning and their Zunes worked perfectly and im sure they werent up all night pressing the play button.
No a Zune owner does not have to be a technical marvel. I just decided to open mine yesterday because i had 300+ new years tracks for a party and i needed it fixed immediatly. That was before i found out that waiting would have been the better course of action. So my earlier post, about the battery detach ---> button reset ----> restore firmware fix, was only for stupid people like me that opened it up.

I am also done with Microsoft minus Zune and Xbox 360.
And not to be rude but that is why you should have asked us of the consequences of pressing those buttons.
and if you didnt see a screen that said please wait in three different languages, you didnt erase everything.
Try the "let the battery die method" first. If you feel up to it, and i dont recommend it anymore, and only if your warranty is gone, you can open it up and detach the battery connector for 30 seconds, then right after you plug it back in press the same buttons you just did.
worked for me

I think I am just stupid because I have a Zune and expect it to work.
Anyway, its toast. Money spent to learn the lesson of never buying from Microsoft again.
Thanks however to everyone for trying. It's all much to complicated for me to own one of these things.
I'm going to try to do that within the next few hours and I'll let you know what happens... i REALLY hope it works... cross your fingers, lol
im glad i helped brm. just be careful when you decide to open, because the battery is loose inside, so if you turn it rightside up to press the reset buttons, the battery could fall out and you may rip the ribbon cable.
good luck.

Not rude at all. A tech wizard probably knows to question all these "fixes".
Me however, not being used to owning a technical piece of hardware such as an MP3 player, I'm just stupid not to ask.
Anyway, didnt see those warning screens, so no harm. Its a brick. I guess i could throw it against a wall for all it is good for.
NO! Dont throw it at the wall! Send it to me! Lol. Well at least you didnt see the screens. I say you wait till tomorrow around 8 am, dont plug it in to the computer, and try to let the battery drain overnight, then tomorrow attempt to see if the internal clock resets itself.
believe it or not all this mayhem is because someone forgot to program the extra leap year day into the Zunes internal calendar. WOW -3 microsoft, America 4

Well, i got it to the clearing contents screen, but it's been on that screen for about 5 min. now, how long is it supposed to be on there (i only had about 5 gigs free, so i have a lot of stuff if that matters)... should i be worried that it's frozen or is it ok that it's taking a while since i have a lot of stuff on it?

I think i can probably sell it to someone for parts then.
Anyway, the thing about Mcrosoft is. They drop the ball, then drop it again, then again, then again. They are incompetent. With Windows, they had a monopoly. Here, not so much. So, Microsoft fails over and over in new markets. And I was stupid enough to trust Zune, oh, and Vista too. I keep dropping the ball, over and over again. No more.
I bought my Zune about 2 years ago, I think. It has been fairly good except for this, oh and the way it wouldn't do podcasts right, oh, and the way it deleted my podcasts, oh and then there was the time.... oh forget it. Too much trouble. I got two years of service and a good lesson.

I am not sure about that BUT, i held the buttons until it told me to plug in my USB cable and i know you didnt type that whole message with your pinky so maybe you are supposed to hold it? However, when i bought my Zune from my friend and had to delete all his rap music off of it, it took awhile to delete 10gigs of music and 5 gigs of movies. but that was using the software. Maybe the Zune takes longer than the software to delete its content? I think what you said makes sense. Just wait it out and get back to me on what happens.

You can definetly sell it for parts - LCD screen 100$
Click pad - 10$
Plastic Body - 15$
Hard Drive - at least 50$
start an Ebay account and you can definetly get some money.
Think how many people a day break their LCD or scratch it or just want to change the color of their Zune.
