(My problem only started after I visted cnn.com & saw a report on the problem yesterday afternoon then came here to verify the story. Like a dummy, I then had to turn on my 30GB just to see what would happen. [DUH!] I had not used it up til that point yesterday. Oh well, it's over now.)

Sorry to hear about all your problems. If you have software version 3.1 but not the same version zune firmware, thats your problem. Check the internet as there is packaged zune.exe's for 2.5 and 3.0 out there
Hope this helps.
Yes, I've got different firmware but I want to stay with the 3.0. My Zune is working fine and knows it's connected, but the computer says it isn't. I am just concerned that once I move to 3.1 it will do the restart thing like the last three did when I upgraded.

Hopefully you haven't lost any money in this ordeal as Microsoft should send out a new one each time. It should be fine with 3.0 just wipe your zune and load up firmware 3.0
It’s been has been 40 hours since my Zune stopped working and it still does not work. My wife’s Zune, which never had a firmware updated, never stopped working. It looks like the original firmware, version 1.0 did not have this problem.
A hard reset being the battery method or the back button + left + middle method?
cuz i am having the same problem as her. I cycle the battery (unplug then back in) and i get a blank screen after the loading and all i can do is turn the backlight back on after it shuts off.
computer doesnt recognize it. im going to unplug the battery one more time and plug it back in then do the Triple Button method and see what that does for me.

I have an update on restoring your Zune if you uplugged (AKA cycled) your battery
You need to make sure you have some battery in your Zune. Open it up unplug the battery. I waited about a minute. Now, when you go to plug the battery back in make sure you are ready to hit the "Back" button, the Left directional button and the middle "Select" button. When the battery is plugged back in immediatly hit those buttons and hold them. I held them until it told me to plug in my USB cable to my Zune.
Open your Zune software after it tells you. You will see a message that says somewhere along the lines of "there may not be enough space" or something like that. just click exit and then on the software you will see a bunch of info about Zune ver 3.1 firmware. Click Install, your Zune will now connect and reconnect a few times but i would just not touch it and let it do its thing and see what happens. If all goes well you will see the ZSOD and think omg it didnt work. BUT then you will see your Zune menu with a black background and then the connect screen will show up with a charging battery bar!
YAY!
Thank you Charge and brm252 for the help!! I am going to share this with my friends and tell them about this site. I typed all this while i was doing and the credit should go to Charge. I just typed it all out for anyone else who might need it!
