Hey guys, I'm looking into picking up a Zune 80, now that they're a little lower in price, and I really don't need 120 GB of room.
Anyway, the problem is, my collection is ripped mostly as 128 kbps mp3's, as I did most all of it before I knew any better. Now, I hear the Zune sounds great even without an EQ, but I'm assuming this is primarily with better quality files (192+)? I have a Zen Vision: M right now and I've always used the EQ to "unflatten" things, and I've been pleased with how it sounds. And though I want to move on to the Zune, I'm not going to go back and re-rip my entire collection. Will my music now sound worse? |

It's hard to say. It really depends on a variety of factors. How much of an audiophile are you? Can you detect the most minute detail in the music? Do you often find you switching up the EQ to every song? If so, you may find issue with the Zune. But then again, I've heard people say that the Zune, with it's processor and unique inner workings is able to produce a better sound than most other media players out there. Another positive thing about the Zune 80 comes with premium earbuds that produce a rich bass response.
My final word on this is try it out. The worst that can happen is you don't find Zune any good and you can go return it. No harm, no foul....

I'm hardly an audiophile, and I don't switch Custom EQ settings really at all. Another forum had some custom EQ recommendations for the Zen, so I tried a few out when I got it, and have left it that way since.
On the Zen Vision M, Going between the custom EQ setting, and turning it off, I notice the music sounds much worse (to me, at least). Songs sounds kind of flat and lifeless. Is the EQ off setting on the ZVM an indication of what the Zune will sound like? |
