Default My thoughts on why Zune sales are so miniscule over the iPODs...

Well for one, The iPOD has been around for A LONG TIME. It pretty much made the MP3 player what it is today. But my main thought is, why isn't Zune available in Europe and other places besides the U.S. and Canada? LOL Canada can't even have the full experience cause they can't even use Zune pass. If Zune were to be released worldwide...it would have more recognition, support, and sales.

To be honest I can understand the Zune Pass not being available in Canada with all the licensing issues. It would be a nightmare sorting those out. But I honestly cannot think of a good reason why the device itself isn't more widespread. Surely the European and Asian markets would be more than profitable.

It takes a ton of planning and distribution to set up markets around the world. I hope some day it will be widely available, but it really isn't as easy as it seems.

I'm not sure what Microsoft is doing, but they need to do more than they are now. When Apple has a new iPod, it's in every major country in the world within a month. It took a year just to get the Zune to Canada. Granted, Apple has factories and stores all over the world, but Microsoft should be able to do something. People have shown they are willing to import Zunes from the US to get them in Asia, Australia, wherever... Microsoft just needs to make it easier on them, and many more people will buy it.

But if Microsoft isn't working on getting the device worldwide, they can do more than mediocre updates to the software and firmware, and can certainly do better than ruining the hardware with each successive update.

maybe we are looking at this from the wrong angle.
maybe instead of taking on the leader (iPod) maybe we should take on the smaller names (creative, sandisk, and sony)
this way we could capture more market share and people will start to notice it more

Sure, and get Microsft slammed with even more anti-trust lawsuits. People hate big business when it comes to their money and court cases. Microsoft already got hit hard, and their aiming for Google now too.

Because even though they dominate the PMP industry, they don't have monopoly over it or anything else. They have lots of competitors, and hold only meager shares of most other markets. If Microsoft starting knocking out companies left and right, that's trust behaviour.

Yeah.. Canada feels the pain...

if it was released worldwide it wouldnt do much better since ppl wont even know what a zune is (some canadians still dont know what a zune is, not surprising since ive never seen any zune ads in my life, whether it be tv,radio, newspaper, etc, and plus ppl would go for the ipod, since they are such a recognized name already)

I think it just needs to be marketed better. It's almost like MS is of the opinion no marketing is needed.

I would buy a Zune tomorrow if it was released in Australia. At this stage the ipod is still the my best alternative. I could get one from importers but if Microsoft wont put in the effort then neither am I.

Because Microsoft has already been slapped with anti-trust suits left and right, and trying to expand is difficult whilst splitting their attention in so many directions(Vista, Windows 7, Projects, Zune, Future R&D, etc.).
