Default New York Times Begrudgingly gives Zune Kudos

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/18/te...8pogue.html?em

While this guy is pretty pro-Ipod, he actually was pretty fair (snarky comments aside)

I think he sees what Microsoft is trying to do with the Social aspects and the Zune Pass.

I wish people thinking that subscriptions are replacement for buying music the normal way, to me it augments it. I pay fifteen bucks to tryout all types of music, if I don't like it I don't buy it, I go through 5 albums before I find one I want to buy, with the Zune Pass I pay 15 dollars to keep from spending 9.99 x 4 or more and being left with something I wish I didn't buy. If I run into something I want to keep for a while then I buy it in mp3 format or CD. Zune pass also gets me past my first impression, (not always good), I download it and if I am still listening to it in 3 months then I buy it out right.

Now Zune has all the streaming and sharing via the picks and channels feature, that is all the more reason for me to keep it. This guy at the Times is starting to see it too.

My Zune 30 is not a Soviet brick! It's an American branded, Chinese/Taiwanese/Something-Asianese made brick, and I'm proud of it.

"Those 150 million existing iPod owners won’t look at you as if you’re some kind of weirdo."
>_>...

Like I care? It's better than your music player that can break with the squeeze of your thumb and finger.

I actually enjoyed that article . I would say that I agree with his opinion to an extent as well. iPods have become 'safe' and Zune 'different'. Sooner or later that 'safe' and 'same' may become 'old' and 'boring' unless Apple manages to keep making iPods that have great new features.

David Pogue is, and always has been, constantly singing Apple's praise - literally. He's the guy that sang that "iPhone song."

He seems to be objective, but in the end it sounds like nothing more than Apple propaganda...(did you read his conclusion *rolls eyes*)

well all the new features from the 3.0 firmware update only apply for the US, whereas itunes is worldwide, its pretty easy to see which company will be doing better

Neat article! I had never thought of the new software and firmware as a way to challenge the iPod by doing something different. That's a great way of doing things because it seems Apple is too firmly planted in their top spot for a late comer to knock them down.

I do disagree with the author's opinion of the appearance of the devices. Admittedly looks were one of the main things that drew me to the Zune. I really loved the matte black SR-71 Blackbird look of the Zune. In comparison the iPod classic looked cheap. One thing the article didn't mention was the toughness of the devices. It seems as of late that Apple is getting complacent and I've heard stories of their players breaking easily. Things are quite different with the Zune. Maybe Apple's media player product line is getting too big for them to manage as well as they should?

I really liked when he mentioned the point that their not competitors any more. Now that I think of it I makes sense, iPods are for those people who want to fit in and want to be "trendy" As for the Zune it's all about the media, which it's really good at doing. The best part of Zune is the discovery of music, since I got my Zune I have never listened to so much music and so much different music, it's amazing!

I know what you mean I haven't discovered this many bands and rediscovered older ones, since I was in high school, when a friend would tell me that you have to listen to this, or I would spend too much of my paycheck on cd's and cassette tapes. With the buying of CD's and tapes you ended up going through a lot of junk to find some that you like.

ipod wasnt even competing with Zune in the first place ( or at least very little, maybe even negligible lol) cause the ipod has such a large dominance in the mp3 market its not even funny. when ppl think music, they automatically think ipod, and thats that
