Default Zune First Charge

I know this has been talked about already, but I think it's crazy how Microsoft doesn't say anything about how long we should charge the Zune when we first get it.

The support site just says "You might need to wait a few minutes after plugging in your Zune while the battery charges enough to start." I called support and they didn't have an answer there either.

This really makes me think they don't want us to charge it right when we first get it, so eventually the battery won't hold charge right. I don't know.

How long did you charge your Zune when you first got it?

Around 3-4 hours.
Until it's a full charge.

Ya, but when the battery turns green unplug it, When I called about my Zune 30 battery problem they said for every two hours extra you keep Zune "Over" charging in kills 5-10% of the battery for the next charge.

I think he means every time you charge.
To summarize, Just charge it enough to make the battery green. Then remove it and shut it off(back and left buttons). So you don't lose battery life on your next charge.

Dude, what the hell.

I guess that explains why I'm only getting a couple hours of music time.

Time to call up support :\

This is great information, thanks! They didn't tell me anything useful when I called, I guess you were lucky.

BTW, does the back/left button thing remove your marks in podcasts?

I've heard this a few times too, but I have to ask... if that is true, then isn't using a dock with your Zune a surefire way to kill your battery life? (I don't own any docks currently myself, so I'm not sure if all docks charge your Zune, or just some) Most people leave their PMP docked for many hours at a time...

To be a bit more on topic: The first time I charged my Zune, I was so excited to use it, I completely forgot to let it fully charge first, and tried out some photos after only 20 minutes of charging. I still get pretty good battery life today, so not charging it for 3-4 hours won't like, 'insta-kill' your battery life, but it definitely isn't recommended.

I find this to be a pretty misinformed statement from the tech support guy, who seems to have no idea what he's talking about. Any modern device, especially one as sophisticated as the Zune should have intelligent microprocessor controlled circuitry which prevents overcharge. A simple test would be to see whether the device feels warm to touch after leaving it charging overnight. However, it is good practice to use the Zune until it drops to about 40% charge before recharging. That way you maximize battery life. Charging daily even when there is plenty of battery life left is just unnecessary.

Docks and other quality chargers use intelligent charging, and switch automatically to trickle mode once the device is fully charged; the current drops and only tops up the battery when it falls below 100% charge. This feature prevents your device battery from getting fried.

Actually, no. It happens to cellphones also, even the sophisticated ones. I have Razr2 V9 and when I bought it, the first thing they told me was that I shouldn't leave charging in the night while asleep because it will over charge and so killing the battery life. It happened to my mom's cellphone! So, I don't think there's a difference with the Zune

Well, technically I don't think it "overcharges". I think whats more likely happening is that once the battery charges fully, and the device is left connected, the battery charges dips after some time, the trickle charge recharges again, and this repeats multiple times overnight. So, you go through several small charge discharge cycles, which reduce battery life.

That's why, what I said is the recognized "best practice" for Li-ion batteries (including those in laptops; leaving the power supply constantly plugged in reduces battery life considerably because it increases operational temperature). Use the device until about 40% charge, and then recharge, rather than constantly trying to maintain 100% battery (unless you are going to use the device non-stop for 10 hours).

The exact opposite happened to my Razr. At first I let the battery drain down before charging it. After about a year the battery would barely last 24 hours before the phone started beeping at me. Now I let it charge every night and I've left it unplugged for days and the battery life is almost normal.

pardon me if this is the wrong place to post this question, im new and this is the closest i could find.

i bought my zune 80 earlier today. i downloaded the software, hooked up the zune to my computer, and put a few song on it. i then charged it for maybe an hour until the battery was green. its about 4-5 hours later and the battery looks to be a little bit over half life right now. i want to plug it into my computer and add some more songs and stuff but since the usb automatically charges my zune, should i wait till my battery is way lower to plug it in and add stuff? or can i do it now?

thanks much.

Go right ahead and plug it in. Not a problem.

Hmmm.....I wonder if that goes for the 2nd generation too....My zune charges really quickly..... LIke, 45 minutes is enough to get it to full when its at half...

BTW, to all who didn't know, don't let your battery drain completely. If its low, suck it up and live without it until you get a chance to charge it
