ZuneBox? [Rumor]

Speculation has begun on the next generation Zune and all the talk Microsoft execs have been giving on games on Zune (not to mention this). This has led to some heavy imaginations and they're starting to rear their ugly head.

UK gadget magazing T3 has published an interesting article in its latest issue heavily speculating the next generation Zune will be more of a handheld portable game system borrowing heavily from Xbox. They even go as far as to say it will be released next year. While the idea is quite intriguing, take it with a grain or two. While Microsoft has recently been commenting on the PSP and gaming on the Zune, it's quite a jump to marry the two and assume Microsoft is going to release a direct competitor to Nintendo and Sony in the hand-held arena.

Would I buy one if they were released tomorrow? Doubtful, but I'm sure there would be a market - but the right question would be is if it would be a good move? Microsoft is already fighting a multi-front battle and adding something else that would inevitably take years to be profitable could prove disasterous. My thought is keep things simple for now. Let the brands become more stable and then go for the the whole wedding ceremony. That's my two pennies, but what about you? What do you think? Forums are open or comment below...

I kind of like my Zune being just a Zune, a hand-held gaming system from Microsoft would be cool though.

I too like my Zune being JUST a Music/video device, straight forward and simple! If I wanted a handheld game system, I would buy a PSP to go with my PS3! If they add the ability to play games on a Zune that is fine just as long as it stays a music machine and not a game machine! Keep it simple! Just my 2 cents! :-)

well though i do agree, the reason i dont like the PSP is because it's too much in one. gaming devices should be different so that they are built solely for that, gaming. the PSP, IMO, isn't a great music/video play just because it's too big, fitting it in your pocket isn't an easy task haha. I do, however, REALLY REALLY wish microsoft would come out with a hand held system, i think it would rock. i'd buy it =P

Id' love my zune having insane gaming possibilitys, but it'd add to many buttons that could get annoying.

Isn't there another thread about the same topic? I'll say what I said in that one: can they at least make a mock-up that looks decent? And I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon.

That's got to be a concept drawing. If something like this was made, it would probably look a lot different.

I'm a big believer in the "Jack of all trades, master of none" philosophy. I typically keep my components separate, and buy higher end individual gadgets.

Anyways, I think it'll be a good thing, as Microsoft needs to branch out from the controlling the Personal Computer market and make even more money. Less money for those damn Apple hippies.

That would be a great idea, but they would probably have to make a distinction from it being a Zune. The Zune's a hand-held extension of your media library, and that seems to be a hand-held extension of the Xbox 360. I think putting the two together would'nt be such a great idea, but a portable 360 would be.

true, while the Zune by itselff is amazing, with simple little games on it(not that im trying to trash the Zune Games), the capablity of the Zune with the funness of the 360 IS an appealing idea. True, while i may never use a feature like playing GTA, or Halp on a zune device, it would still be nice to some people who are on the go a LOT...

Not to mention the biggest factor of all in this case: Battery life. Most portable game systems are notorious for their long lasting, and not to mention durable battery lifespan. Most notable at themoment i can think of right now is the DS. The DS has some incredibly fun games, and an extremely long battery life.
I play mine like, every day, and i haven't charged that thing in a MONTH...

I'm sure people on the Zune Boards have noticed, especially people who design and play Zune games, have noticed the lax in the Zune's battery life. It's fine for a music player, but fo the full potential of the zune, it's amazing. The possibilities are endless, it just misses a logical keypad...
