It doesn't have an alarm, sleep timer, calendar, on-the-go playlists editing, notes, the ability to be used as an external harddrive (w/o the need to hack it), an EQ (didn't bug me until I got some headphones that sounded like crap with my Zune, but great with my iPod), video playlists, etc. The software is lacking in the same ways and more than the device. There's no crossfade playback, no sound check (no audio leveling, can't increase or decrease the volumes of songs or videos), no Internet Radio (not useful for most, but I'm sure some iTunes users use it), and the new and welcomed auto-playlists are still limited. The software does have a built-in converter, but unless I've missed it there's no way to manually convert audio and video files. The Zune Marketplace is stepping in the right direction, though I doubt I'll ever use it. All of that aside, I still love my Zune. I guess that says something about the player. It's still cooler than any iPod I've owned, but it's got a long way to go. It does have it's own cool features that stand out from the iPod, but it'll take more than that for some people.
I never noticed most of this stuff was missing. I guess I don't really have a need for it. I have a creative zen vision M, it does pretty much everything you've mentioned and was doing it three years ago. (sorry but that's a dig to both ipod and zune since the zen was cheaper too

The only feature I would like to see is with the audio control. I have a smart phone and use that for nearly half the stuff mentioned above. as for converting formats I'm a digital artist and have most of the software on hand to do that, so I never realized it was an issue.

I agree audio leveling and an EQ would be clutch on the zune. I don't think it (the 8gb) is very good audio wise compared to the vision m, but I don't think the Ipod is any better either. I will say in my experience with the 3 players good headphones make all the difference. like good lenses on a dslr camera.
I have v-moda's for on the go and seinheisers for sitting at my desk. I highly recommend either, but the moda's are way sexier.

That's the thing. None of these features are new and iTunes has had them all for quite some time. These features have been in iTunes at least since 2005. That's when I purchased the original iPod Nano. They were useful then, they were useful with my iPod Video, and they'd go great with my Zune. I was never a fan of Creative, but I've heard some good things about them. I considered the Zen Vision M, but the iPod Video won out. Like I said, I can look past not having some of them. I only brought this up to see why people feel that the Zune has so many more features when compared to the iPod.

Zune will probably not gain that much market share in the next few years, unless they come out with a device comparable to the Apple iPhone, which is now Apple's second largest selling device after iPod
