Is Zune Still a Killer?

BTW - I do, however, there are a couple things (i.e. the software) that could be improved. I still love Zune and I think there's still tremendous potential here...

The Zune is still WAY better than the iPod, and I think they will fix at least some of the software problems in future updates.

Heh, I remember selling these when I worked at the Sharper Image. We were supposed to pitch them as iPod Killers. Zunes are great, but I don't know if they are going to topple Apple in this area.

Zune is super strong and still an Ipod killer, especially the Zune itself, I played with my friends Ipod and I am very happy i didnt get one since you have to rotate your finger around the damn circle just to get anything done.

As far as the software, Its fantastic but still flawed, everything is well organized but,

-If they could add a DVD ripping feature then life would be great

-Podcasting could be handled better, theres a weird lil glitch where if you download a podcast it wont sync with your Zune unless you go back into the podcast section of the marketplace and click "Subscribe"

- I, personally, cannot see the thumbnails of the pictures when I look at the pictures i have on my device, can see the thumbnails fine on my collection though.

- Divx support is needed
+ If they really want to sell the video playing feature they should support conversions from other file formats.

- They need to cover Screen damage, seriously.

- They need better tech support, talking to someone from India is fine n all but an American would be alot better just for the cultural affinity alone, among other reasons.

- 2 versions of the software really isnt needed, probably an advanced users switch that'll add more options.

- Zune software doesnt support or even read old drm'd ripped music from cd's ripped in Windows Media player, thats a major downfall.
+ Microsoft should just come out with a drm-stripping tool for the windows media drm'd software, seriously I dont feel like using some pirate software just to listen to my own music in my own zune.

Other then that all is well with Zune, I mean what more can you ask for, people can complain all they want but untill they clarify what they want, its kinda hard to make the appropriate changes.

ALSO: the zune software, when it fails to sync videos or music of x reason it keeps trying when you resync your zune, not hard to get by ... but should be fixed.

The hardware is beautiful and amazing, but the software just ruins the experience. ! It hangs about 50% of the time, I'm still not sure how to get it to actually update the 'collection,' it's butt ugly, and it is very close to impossible to actually get videos onto the zune in less than a week. Fix that, and you've beat the ipod.

We just purchased our Zune; we have never used a Ipod, but so far the mandatory software you have to use is CRAP. I'm a bit confused about what it really does for you outside of re encoding files and transferring them to the zune. The lack of being able to manually organize your data is just flat out wrong!

How do you manage Videos? We are trying one in our dental office hooked up to ITV goggles so people can watch recorded TV shows. Without being able to organize the videos, it’s a worthless feature. We need to be able to organize our shows by “TV Show\Season\episode.wmv”. I could have sworn I read somewhere that this was possible before I purchased the Zune but can’t figure out how to do it now

If MS isn’t going to write useable software, they should at least let the device read folders.

I prefer it as the predator of iPods, stalking and killing its prey behind closed doors. Software and the Zune Pass is the Zune's weakness. I think its dumb to pay 14.99 a month for music that you can play and listen to when you pay that much money even if there are hacks for that. It would be awesome if you could still keep those songs after you decide to stop paying for the pass but after a certain amount of time having the pass.
The hardware is awesome and it looks like nothing else. The album art is beautiful and everything else physical about the Zune is amazing.

Well I never thought the Zune was a iPod killer just really good competition for Apple but when I first heard Zune was the iPod killer it made me want it. It's software definitely could use help from the community on a redesign or fixing up.

I prefer my zune 30 to any other PMP
It helps that it has buttons so i can change volume and next/prev song while I am mowing, working, etc

I bought a Creative Zen Vision:M from woot and if you could take the best from it and put it in the zune I would say yes and if Microsoft would advertise more to let people know it is out there it might beat it.
The reason I say that about m/s is when I talk to the people I work with about the zune they get a blank look on there faces and ask what it is. oh and one who is a 19 girl said you mean an ipod right

Hell yeah its a killer, it doesnt really kill ipod because apple has pretty much made a monoply but the zune is killer!

its definantly on well on its way to becoming one, im at a school of 15,000 and i only know 2 other ppl with a zune

shown it to countless ipod lovers, and all think that the zune is cool, i even got an ipod touch owner to say the zune is way cooler : P

however, there r still a few annoyances and such that need to be taken care of if the zune will truly destroy the ipod's monopoly like song duplication, sync issues, and more or less the entire video component minus the screen(ie file compatibility, sound/video quality, organization), and the whole social thing is a bit of a bust cause of the the 3 day/play limit and a sheer lack of things to do with it plus a lack of other zuners depending on the area.

other than that, i love the thing, use it daily for hours on end, can get away with charging it once a week
