Default 52 year old music lover needs advice re:IPOD 80GB vs Zune 80GB

Hello everyone..I'm 52 -love music (own a lot of cd's,live concert cd's from friends -allman bros.etc, and performance dvd's) .

I rec'd some best buy gift cards for christmas and went to buy my 2nd mp3 player yesterday. My first was a very useful and adequate 40GB Creative Zen Extra.

The salesman was out of the Zune 80GB and wanted to sell me an IPOD Classic 80GB for the same $249.00. I walked because I wanted to research some more. I have never owned an IPOD and I wrongly assumed you needed a mac to run it (my naiveness).

The screen is so much larger and I loved the large text (reader glass wearer) on the Zune.

Could you please give me some testimonials? I have a 3 year old 80GB Hard drive emachine PC at home with Windows XP Service Pack 2 OS.

Thank you all.

I would go with the zune. You might try buying one at bestbuy's website. How much RAM does your pc have?

*CNET rates the Zune 80 higher than the 80gb iPod.
*Zune has better sound quality.
*The Zune was the best selling harddrive player this holiday season.

I'd say go with the Zune. I don't know about you, but staring at blank white screens is really boring and hurts my eyes. I think you'll find that you love the Zune once you actually have it and don't have to worry too much about hurting it. The iPod is scratched before you take it out of its plastic sleeve that says "DON'T STEAL MUSIC" in 12 languages.

Thank you for your quick replies and yopur opinions.
My computer only has 512 MB of DDR SDRAM.

I am thinking about this purchase as lasting 3 or 4 years minimum so durability is an issue also. Again-the larger screen seems easier on my eyes also.

your computer can handle the software just fine. I recommend you go into options and turn off the video effects.

It should last that long no problem . The Zune includes a 1 year warranty if anything goes wrong in the first year it is covered.

One thing I would try before buying either device is download iTunes and Zune-mediaplayer and get a feel for them. Because that is the software you will be stuck with for managing your device. Also keep in mind the Zune doesn't have an EQ or HDD access, But the iPod doesn't have an FM radio or wireless sync.

i would without a doubt go with the Zune....the screen size alone gives it an advantage over the ipod....i did alot of research before i purchased my 80 gb zune and i dont regret it....but like yensed had mentioned you might want to get a feel of the software before you jump in....because u might prefer the ease of mp3 players that dont need software to use

Definitely zune, because it is easier on the eyes. I like it. Besides all the other stuff.

Maybe those will help.

The only reason I would choose an Ipod classic over the zune is because the Ipod classic has up to 160 gb of storage. But I prefer the Zune's bigger screen and 80 gb aint bad. Since you have an 80 GB PC you probably wont even be able to fill your Zune since all of the contents on it have to be stored on your PC. You may want to, at some later date, upgrade to a larger capacity harddrive on your home PC.

Thanks everyone for your help. I actually now want to exchange my IPOD 80 for a Zune 80 after reading everone's testimonials.

I am going to load about 2,000 songs I have in My Music on the computer (it's currently in Windows Media Player) and hopefully some performance DVD's. Also would like to load some photo's (I have about 1,200 in My Pics)
The 80GB seems like it would do the trick storage wise.

I love the idea of the larger screen and touch pad.

I have to buy at a Best Buy because of a store credit I have and right now I cannot find 1 store within 35 miles of me that has them.

Thanks again everyone.

This 81-year old music lover says definitely go with the Zune. I had a first generation iPod and my 80 walks all over it for reasons you can find outlined on this board.
