Default Best Buy employees

I was at Best Buy the other day, and was looking at accessories in the mp3 section. I overheard a salesperson talking to a customer about mp3 players. The customer obviously didn't know anything about them, and was asking for the opinion of the kid working there. The kid was talking about how nice the iPod players are, and one of the other models as well. When the customer asked about another mp3 player, the kid tells him that is a Zune made by Microsoft but that he doesn't really know anything about them.....and then proceeds to tell the guy that they aren't very good mp3 players and he would not recommend one to anybody. I chuckled out loud, which made them both look in my direction. I just smirked at the kid, and shook my head in disgust. How do these stores get off allowing such morons to be selling products?

He "doesn't really know anything about them" but somehow knows that they are not very good mp3 players... Should've walked over and given him a good smack on the head.

I've noticed the same thing when I'm at best buy. Whenever people are browsing the mp3 players, the representatives always have to show off the "new super cool" iPod, completely skipping every other player on display.

I imagine their interviews go something like this:
"Do you know what an 'iPod' is?"
"Yeah."
"You're hired."

I love how you can walk up to the media players and play with every player there, but once you touch an iPod, suddenly the employees notice you.

I went to Best Buy a while ago, I walked up to the Zune 80, and nothing. I played with it for 5 minutes. I went and touched the iPod touch and suddenly the guy noticed me; "do you have any questions about the iPod Touch?"

That is funny. I used to be a manager of Best Buy for about 5 years, always had 1st or 2nd best ranking in the district most of the time, and always setting records for sales. THat was the reason i left though, is they kept hiring people with no skills or training, and putting them on the floor. I always tried to help them out, and give them pointers (Store managers and below) but eventually with not getting anywhere and customer service skills below my expectation, i called it quits and left.
Funny thing though (since it's been 10 years since then.), about 4 years ago i over heard someone talking to a customer about HDTV and how anything else is outdated, i walked over and ASSISTED him and his customer and educated them with REAL information and specs. (ATM, only about 3-4 channels broadcasted any material, and out of those, maybe lucky to watch 3-4 hours of content in a whole day that actually used it. )
Moral is, obviously Best Buy hasn't changed much, and also be carely what someone tells you when buying something. Research a bunch of forums, and learn the smart way, not the hard way.

yea i research things before i buy them... plus if i were an employee i would ask what they are looking for and give them choices of what fits their needs... obviously knowing all the specs of the products so the customer knows what im talkn about.

Cool Promoting zune at BB

I was at Best Buy last week also, & in the mp3 section were a husband & wife trying to decide between the Nano & zune 8g. I just stood there & smiled while the girl tried to explain about the zune & the husband asked me "You have one of these don't you?" I then told him I had a Zune & my wife & daughter have ipods. After about 10 minutes of comparing features for them, he looked at the sales rep. & said "We'll take the Zune". Then he shook my hand & said "Before you leave here, you need to get a job application". He even went to the manager & suggested that he interview me. When the manager interviewed me, I basically explained all models in his mp3/cell phone section & he told me "it's good that you're knowledgeable, but I need someone in shipping & receiving". At that point, I said "No thank you" & left. As long as I could bring another zuner into the family, my job was done.....

If these stories are true, I doubt it. Who would give a technological ignoramus a high paycheck if they work at a store that specializes in technology?

I was at a Best Buy and the guy was telling a woman that Ipods can play any kind of music, say if you rip it, download, etc. and he proceeded to tell the woman that Microsoft's Zune can only play their music, and that you can't use any other type of media except what is on the Zune marketplace, he told her that she must restart her library. I was just like WOWW.

You should of corrected him. What kind of mp3 player doesn't let you rip Cd's? This is why I don't go to Best Buy.

They are true. I have head convos like that. Maybe if I see somebody looking at both the ipod and Zune, I will say something to them.

Plus, $9.00/hr isn't a enormous paycheck.

Well, from personal experience, if you attempt to dissuade a customer who is making an independent choice, they get really ticked off. If you fell the need to correct a bumbling sales rep however, go right on ahead.

That's why I encourage everybody to do their own research.
