It's being reported by The Inside Circle's Marques Lyons that the Zune HD will support foreign characters. Lyons has close ties to the Zune Team and shouldn't be discounted. This inclusion is probably due to the fact the desktop Zune Software already supports unicode, he says. It begs the question whether existing devices will get similar support with an update. We shall see soon enough...
Not everyone is poor in China. That was rude and racist, dunce.
On another note, this is sweet! Spanish characters here I COME!!!!
i wasn't trying to be racist, but allot of the people there are lucky to have a radio. it's a poor country, especially considering theyr communist and have 2 billion people (by communist, i mean the government, not that the people are all communist). $250 is hard to get when everyone there is making the sqame amount of money...

but it would be cheaper there. but still.
Please do your research before posting stuff like this, you've insulted people for sure for saying such stuff.
1) only 1.3 billion people, far from that 2 billion you posted
2) it's not a poor country. hong kong (which belongs to china) is the free-est and best place to do business and trade region in the world (according to international rankings last year)
3) Since components are MADE in china and taiwan mostly, chinese can get things at far cheaper prices than americans can (except ipods for some reason). An example would be that 100GB toshiba drive to mod the zune 30 with. It's sold here for at least $130 but over there, i've seen it for about $80 new.
4) Just to give an idea of technology penetration in China, in 2006, according to forbes, china surpassed the US in internet use. Mobile cell usage is also ranked #1 at 300 million subscribers.
These are just a few facts to set you straight. Let's not even discuss the profits GM, VW, Ford, BMW, etc. all the car companies are making over there (despite losses in the US), or the fact that China holds approximately 24% (according to wikipedia) of the US debt.
The western portrayal of Chinese being "poor" is because the US is so focused on human rights, etc., thus, with the exponentially growing middle class but widening of the peasantry class vs elite class (poor getting poorer, rich getting richer), it is much easier now for media to focus fire on China's shortcomings.
Next time, make sure you get your facts right before posting

did you ever notice that those are the companys that people from the west moved there because they can pay their workers ALLOT less than they can here. Hong Kong is a buisiness place for white people that take their business there to save money. I do know about it. how do you expect they can be making that much money in a communist government when everyone makes barely anything and the government gets all the money. I'm not saying they arent capable of making millions, for god sake allot of them are doctors, and im not racist, its just not that available for the citizens. as for the GM, Ford, VW, BMW, im sure its the same exact thing, western business taking advantage.
I think Unicode support would be awesome, and i agree they should give it to all the old zunes.. But i also kinda think this might point to a international release..

First of all, I'm not accusing you of being racist although you certainly are profiling a lot (white people, communists, lol...)
Sure businesses outsource their products to Asia to make as large a profit margin as possible. Any commercial company who says they are not in it for the money is lying. But it's not nearly as badly as you think it is. While I admit I am hesitant to say the greater majority are well off, many people are. Nor do I deny some government officials being corrupt and taking bribes.
Despite the government being communist, and despite what history says, the government plays a lot less of a role in a normal civilian's life than it did 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. Not everyone is paid the same. Some make millions, others make a few dollars a day. China is no longer an isolated country - it's GDP has surpassed Germany last year and is now ranked third (or was it fourth) in the world.
If you ever go to China, particularly Beijing or Shanghai, you would see that cars, electronics, the luxuries of life are readily available to many people. Many families own two cars. Companies provide cars as well. There is a huge growth in the private business sector as well - a whole industry that the government is not allowed to touch. There are enforced minimum wage laws. People are not starving and homelessness is at a minimum. The government also subsidies gas to PROMOTE citizens to buy their own cars. Up until last year, gas was about $1.75 a gallon in China.
Go on MSNBC or somewhere and look at the progress of china., it's nothing compared to what was left after Tiananmen 1989 (although censorship is still widely used). It is a world of difference.
On a side note - or rather, BACK ON SUBJECT, finally, I'm getting tired of blocks for characters. Technically, the zune always supported unicode. MS just never integrated the font sets necessary to display the characters.....
ooh, dilpickle, i never thought of that, smart one. (not being sarcastic). if it's international then i CANT WAIT to get my zunepass more than anything. i hate using limewire, it wastes bands tallent and it sucks anyways. and then i can listen to more than 5 crowbar songs cuzz thats all limewire HAS!
(go germany). well i have chinese friends. well one, ive only met one. but i was pointing more to the fault of white people and their government. did the people who have all the money move there from another country? because it is true that most make very little, and kids have to leave school to support their families. i mean being a doctor in North America, you would be very wealthy. in china its common. well thats what i have been taught anyways.

Concerning Shanghai and Beijing, the quality of life in those cities is quite misleading as to the life of the average Chinese citizen. The government there has divided the populace into a 2 caste society - those permitted to live in the urban areas, and those relegated to farm country. Everyone wants to get into the cities, but only the select few have this option. Since the vast majority of the Chinese population is in the rural areas, the ordinary person isn't experiencing any of the benefits you describe.
Regarding the side note, you're exactly right - accented Latin and Cyrillic characters have long worked perfectly on the Zune, and those can only be represented through Unicode.
