CIO editor Martin Veitch interviewed Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO at Microsoft’s London conference “Technologies to Change Your Business: How Customers Are Implementing Tomorrow’s Strategies Today”.
During a lengthy interview, Steve Balmer was asked to justify developing the Zune media player.
CIO: Why has Microsoft developed Zune?
Ballmer: At the end of the day, one of the big trends is that all content is going digital. And if we don’t have the software and services that are useful, helpful and valuable for the consumption of music and video, we are sort of not really a player.
Now, we built the Zune hardware with the Zune software - and what you’ll see more and more over time is that the Zune software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc.
After many rumours, this would be the first high-level confirmation that the software is coming to Windows Mobile. While no timescale was given, its likely we will need to wait unti Windows Mobile 7 to see the software on devices.
And i already have a Windows Mobile phone. So to all you guys asking for a Zune phone, Microsoft is going to add Zune software to many different kinds of phones. As long as they are windows based. I love this idea instead of making an iphone clone. It just go to show you, it really is all about software.
This...IMO....is going to be lame and worthless. The softwre is for getting music on the Zune. And I really don't think that if someone has a Zune+Computer, that they're going to need this....

It will be an awesome replacement for the aging windows media player for windows mobile. Obviously.

I don't see how you guys can complain about having to buy a new phone
i mean phones go out of date about every 2 years anyways.
Also how are they gonna get any money if they just keep updating the software for free and you still have your phone from the year 2000.
Which is why i'm suprised they haven't made the firmware cost anything but it probably makes people buy a zune over an ipod.
