Default Latest CES News: Zune and Bill Gates' Departure

Tonight, CES was kicked off and Microsoft was one of the key features (see the entire key note HERE) Among the topics discussed were Zune, Bill Gates' departure coming this July, along with Sync, Windows Mobile, and Xbox 360.

We've had a fabulous response to the [zune] in reviews and I think it's becoming quite clear we're becoming the clear alternative to the iPod. With capabilities like subscription, wi-fi, and a social experience, we think we can differentiate ourselves in this space, and we think there's plenty of opportunity for that market to grow. In fact, we've been so pleased with the results in the United States, for the first time we'll begin selling Zune outside the United States in Canada in the Spring, and there'll be more opportunites for us to expand in the future. "
- Robbie Bach, Microsoft President, Entertainment & Devices Division

The announcement of a Canadian Zune launch may come as no surprise for those of you who heard about this a while back right here on ZuneBoards. Bach goes on to talk about ZuneSocial:
"Now I wanna say that music is inherently a social experience, and we want to build on that experience. And that's why we introduced this concept of ZuneSocial. Now ZuneSocial is in beta right now, and it has about 1.5 million people who've tried the service out initially."
Another noteworthy announcement was the departure of Bill Gates that is expected to happen in July.

He will remain on the boards for key decision making, but will relinquish his duties as Chariman this summer. A celebrity-filled video brought a lighter side to the announcement with faces of Bono, Jay-Z, director Steven Spielberg, Al Gore, and U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton.

Also announced, ABC, MGM Studios, and Disney will be adding video content to the Xbox Live marketplace, but no word on video integration into Zune Marketplace. This will bring popular TV shows like Grey's Antomy, Desarate Housewives, and Lost, as well as thousands of movie titles to Xbox Live subscribers.
