So What�s a Podcast?

With podcasts being added to the functionality of the Zune come this November, some may wonder what the heck they are. First, they are not just for iPods, and Apple does not hold proprietary rights to the term. The word �podcast� has just become the most popular term in this pop-culture driven industry. Like Band-Aid and Kleenex, which have become synonymous to bandages and tissues, podcasts have become the preferred term to internet broadcasts. Second, they allow people just like you to get automatic updates from whomever you subscribe to.

The idea is like a radio broadcast. The broadcaster (or podcaster) sends a file out through the internet in either an audio, video, image, or text file via a �feed� (usually RSS of ATOM) to your computer/software for you to receive and enjoy. You can subscribe to certain feeds by clicking on the icon shown below from your web browser. Many sites have feeds for you, and they deliver information automatically once subscribed. And with the added bonus of wireless sync, you can be heading out the door and still catch the latest news and information!

So how will you get them on your Zune? Cesar from ZuneInsider says Zune Marketplace will have a feature where you can type in URLs and subscribe that way (see the podcast menu from the new Zune Marketplace HERE). Or you can go to the various sites and subscribe and many will give you the option of choosing whch software will receive the feed (in that case you could choose My Yahoo!, iGoogle, and of course, Zune Marketplace).

You can already start receiving podcast feeds from ZuneBoards (see on the Home page on the left under 'SYNDICATE'), Zune.net, and HERE! Is this great or what?!

P.S. Could we start seeing the Putis&Chiups Show as a podcast? Hrm�.

Definitely. Once we figure out how we're going to effectively 'stream' them.

Well Putis, I think you have 2 options here.

1) Prerecord the show and then release it as a podcast, or
2) record the live show and then broadcast the recording as a podcast after the show.

And besides, podcasts are generally used to just stay up to date and not listen to as it's happening. It gives the subscriber a way to choose when they want to listen to it.

Hope that makes sense... If you go HERE, you'll see Zune sites are already doing audio podcasts....theirs is a little boring though....

Yeah, but you'll need to put it onto the RSS feed (unless you're already doing that) so subscribers will automatically get it (or maybe set up an RSS feed just for the show?)

I put a short promo together for podcasts (with a short plug for my own). It's posted at YouTube but I don't have enough posts yet to give a direct link. Just search under "podcasting promo". It should be the first on the list.

Basically, most podcasts are blogs where the posters record audio in mp3 format and post it to a blog site. Since blogs can be distributed through RSS, podcasts can be as well.

I can't wait for podcast. I hope to see some pro.Zune podcast soon. And i just had a funny thought..Alot of the popular podcasters out there like Leo laporte have trashed the Zune. So i wonder will he change his tune to get us to listen to his apple fanboy show. Podcasters need all the listeners they can get. Podcastingnews.com has already posted a sort of turn around article. What you guys and gals think?
