Cool FREE Music on Zune??

It's being reported by BusinessWeek that Universal has approached Microsoft and some mobile phone companies in an effort to jump start a subscription music service. If Microsoft takes it, Zune owners may get tons of free music if it agrees to pay the subscription fee for their customers.

Universal is also getting Sony BMG and Warner Music in on this deal which could mean millions more FREE tracks on Zune!

Many see this move as a way for Universal to stick it to Apple. Universal, if you remember, came out earlier this year and went on record saying, "Every MP3 player other than Zune promotes piracy." Which came as a shock to some iPod fans (but most already knew it was true). Universal also declined to sign a long term contract with Apple's iTunes, agreeing to an 'at-will' contract, meaning it could, at any time, pull its content from the store.

The service is being called 'Total Music' and would essentially cost Microsoft $90 per Zune sold to offer the entire Universal, Sony BMG, and Warner Music libraries for FREE. Microsoft is already paying Univesal $1 for every Zune sold so this might be much a stretch, but the added sales of Zunes might justify it...

How cool would that be?

NOTE to BILL GATES: Pretty please?

They dont want MS to pay a subscription, only Zune users...I think it'd be like a Zune Pass..only for 5 bucks a month, and it would have more backing than it currently does.

No, if you read the article, it said the cost would be $90 per Zune. If it were to happen, which is up in the air right now, it would be interesting to see if it would increase the price of Zunes by $90. A 4GB Zune 4 would be $239....

We shall see. Universal is talking to anyone and everyone who makes digital music players that isn't Apple...

I do love me some iPod dissing. Sounds good but at what cost and what quality?

128kbps CBR although free is still kind of sucky.

They'd have to market this free music thing like crazy to justify the price increase. The typical teenager would perhaps glance at the zune but price is the first thing that jumps out at a customer. Most uninformed people would meander down to the iPods.

And I agree with GOW. Quality would be a factor too.

I would assume that it would be 192kbps. Just like the regular marketplace is now.

And I don't think MS would raise the price of the zune, cause you can pre-order one now on amazon. May add it as an option "Unlimited music for the life your your device, $90 extra"

To call it "free" is a misnomer if it costs $90 for the service. The consumer will pay for it one way or another. I don't think it's a good business move when consumers are only going to use it to justify the cost of the player.

First post FWIW.

Personally, for me if the music isn't lossless then I probably wouldn't be interested. Maybe for my wife or children, but I am getting the 80 GIG because I have my library ripped lossless and that's how I intend on keeping it. It's the biggest reason why I never considered any of the "I" products.

i love zune marketplace as it is
i dont have an issue with DRM as i dont see myself ever cancelling my subscription. so if they just added moe **** to ZMP... then all the better. although anything more then 15$ a month would be gay.
