Default Zune 1, now the Zune 30. Zune 80, Zune 8, and Zune 4.

Here's some basic info on the new Zunes, and the future of the Current Zune.

Hard drive Zunes

* It's called the Zune 80 and, shockingly enough, it has 80GB of storage.
* Uses the new Zune Pad -- four way touch-sensitive d-pad (with up, down, left, and right buttons).
* It will sell for $250 (with "premium" headphones).
* Available only in black (to start).
* Screen size has increased to 3.2-inches (from 3-inches). As far as we know the resolution is still QVGA.
* Dimensions are 61.1 x 108.2 x 12.9mm (2.4 x 4.25 x 0.5-inches), some 1/3rd smaller than the classic Zune.
* The classic Zune will now be known as the Zune 30 -- it's not going anywhere. More on that in a sec.

New flash Zunes

* Zune 8 and Zune 4 are the names for the 8 and 4GB flash based models.
* Also uses the Zune Pad.
* These will sell for $200 and $150 respectively.
* Both will be available in pink, green, black, and red.
* It will feature a 1.8-inch screen (compare to the nano's 2-inch screen).
* Dimensions are 41.4 x 91.5 x 8.5mm (1.6 x 3.6 x 0.33-inches) -- compare to the new iPod nano, at 69.8 x 52.3 x 6.5mm (2.75 x 2.0 x 0.26-inches).

Everything else

* New Zunes ship in November, date not yet announced.
* All Zunes (including the Zune 30) will have a new, redesigned interface and feature parity. In other words, early Zune 30 adopters will have all the same software features as new Zune 80, 8, and 4 users.
* Additional native video codecs for h.264 and MPEG-4 -- users no longer need transcode those file types to WMV.
* WiFi sync to host computer! Includes moving over music, movies, photos, podcasts, etc.
* Podcast support! (Sorry, no over the air downloads -- sync only.) Podcasts can also be shared via WiFi.
* The 3x3 song sharing DRM has had its three day restriction removed, but users can still only play files three times.
* There is still NO wireless music store.
* The Zune software is all new and rewritten, and is supposed to actually be more than a rebadge of WMP11 now. Friggin finally.
* The Zune music store is going DRM-free, with over 1m MP3 tracks being made available for download. Other details (like which labels, whether there is a DRM-free upgrade path is for users who've bought music with DRM, price differences, etc.) are not yet revealed.

New Zune accessories

* Zune Home AV Pack ($99.99) - "Home Dock with three faceplates to accommodate each Zune device, wireless remote, AC adaptor and composite AV output cable."
* Zune Dock Pack ($49.99) - "Home Dock with three faceplates to accommodate each Zune device and AC adapter."
* Zune Car Pack ($79.99) - "Redesigned FM transmitter/charger and dashboard grip pad."
* Zune Cable Pack ($39.99) - "Sync cable, composite AV output cable and audio cable."
* Zune Premium Headphones ($39.99)
* Zune Leather Case ($49.99)
* Zune Sync Cable ($19.99)
* Zune AC Adapter ($29.99)

Cool, cool. Glad there's no "squircle" and it's a touch pad instead.

Wow. I want one. What should I tell Wal-Mart when I return my Zune 30. It just won't sync?

The touch pad i really the selling point for me, do you know if the zune is still going to have the same casing or is it more like the iPod's *shinny but scratchy*.

Now thats an ipod killer, the only complain I have is that all they did was change the 3x3 rule to 3xas many days as you want, its relatively pointless, but I suppose it still is an improvement

I have to admit, I'm really loving the new interface. The best feature by far is podcast integration.

I can't wait till the new firmware update and the new Zunes.

Same here. It's still a month away, but now that I know it's out there, it's going to seem even longer.

I completely agree. I have been downloading all my podcasts automatically through iTunes and manually putting them on my zune. The audio podcasts are fine but Video podcasts(Or Vidcasts, if you will) always had to be converted. So I would have to manually go out to the website and get a .wmv version. It will be great having both H.264 video files and .wmv files compatible with the Zune... Though I hope Microsoft doesn't do something stupid and require all vidcasts on the zune-podcast-place to be in .wmv format.

Sorry, but I do not understand what it means by touch pad. Is it going to be like the iPod scroll wheel?

Also, I know that this is off topic but could someone help me? When I try to set the zune software as the default for file types, there is no file types tab in the options dialog box.

It'll be the best of both worlds. It will work like the Zune 30 touchpad did, but also function like an iPod clickwheel. Smart on Microsoft's part, but I'll opt to use it like a Zune 30 (clikwheel is one of the reasons I'm dumping iPod)

Thank you very much. Now, if only I could set the file types...

Anyways, what changed with the whole "podcast" thing? I thought that it was supposed to be illegal for Microsoft to have that.

Just right click on the file you want to be affiliated with zune, go over "Open With", Select "Choose Program", Select "Zune" and check the box that says "Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File"... I'm sure you can do it with-in the zune software, But I don't have it installed on this PC. If thats not helpful, Try searching around or asking in Zune Help & FAQ.

A "Podcast" is just an audio or video program which is available online for download. The word "Podcast" is not copyrighted or trademarked by Anyone.

Yeah, I like that it still has actual buttons though. If I don't like the "Flicking" thing, I can just do it the way I do now.

yeah... one big bonus the ipod had was the touch pad.

here's what I mean. On the ipod, you could scroll quickly and then instead of going from song to song really fast, you could go by letter. You could go up and down by letter as long as you kept you finger on the pad. Take it off so you can go from song to song again.

If the zune doesn't have something just like this with its new touch pad I'll cry.
I don't like how I have to hold down the button to go fast. I really hope this new touch pad gives more control over where you go in your library.
