Zune Software on Linux via VMWare

It is possible to install Windows on a Virtual Machine inside Linux. Zune syncs (almost) normally with the Zune software. Read more to find out what I mean "almost" and watch the screenshot...

VMware is program which emulates a PC. This means you can install and run an operating system like Windows in Linux (or Linux in Windows if thats what you want). Its beyond the scope of this article to explain you how to do this, there is a lot of documentation online.

What I meant by "almost" is that VMware supports USB 1.1 so the sync process is a bit slooowww. But beyond that you won't have any more problems if you pay attention to a tiny issue: If you have USB 2.0 (most PCs today) you have to unload the USB 2.0 driver from Linux before connecting Zune. If you don't do this the Blue Screen of Death will appear on Windows, inside VMware or it will just hang.

This is how you do it from the console: sudo rmmod ehci_hcd . Of course if you have USB 1.1 on your PC you don't have to do this.
