Yeah, I just don't think MS would be waiting this long to announce it if it was this soon. They announced Zune v1 two months before it was released, and rumors had been circulating for months before (May or June?). Plus, MS is a big fan of pre-release testing, I would think they would get in more time. I wouldn't be suprised to hear an announcement soon with a November release date. Although with this story, they may put off the announcement a week or so to let it die down a bit (or so I hope)

the zune that MS sent me via club.live.com, says it is hardware 2.0, but it doesn't look like the one in the picture?

Well there is a major difference here. This is v2 Zune and is not subject to the same scrutiny as the first (I would think). Call me hopeful, but I think if MS waits any longer, they could really miss out on revenue this holiday season. I think they were originally slated to come out this month, but as you may have heard, the 80Gb Zune hit a snag...

The unconfirmed product hit a snag.... Another genius post from ZuneScene.com!

Not yet, and that's the biggest mystery right now. I, along with about 1 million Zune owners are on the edge of their seats waiting for some news or the official word. I know a lot is riding on this holiday season, so it would make sense for Microsoft to pull some big things out of its hat.

I know I'm crossing my fingers and my toes!!

If the leaked information is indeed accurate, then IMO, the the perceived success of the Zune 2 release will hinge on the firmware and firmware updates to the Zune 1. Considering that software is MS' strong suit, I'm hopeful. If there is no firmware update, or only a minor tweak, then it is because of a conscious decision by MS to direct the future of Zune into obscurity and an historical footnote of consumer media players.

Does this article APPEAR to corroborate Zunescene's statement?

I wasn't paying attention during the z1 launch, but how far in advance did MS spring the news and/or did the internet start buzzing with a leak? All I have to compare to is the Apple frenzy around the iPhone/Pod Touch/Nano. Either MS is a steel fortress of information security, or the release date is farther away than rumored, IMHO.

Also, what do you guys think would benefit z2/1 sales more - building up anticipation by releasing scraps of news here and there, or springing the whole deal on us 2 minutes before launch? I'm of the opinion that if they slowly build momentum with features and news here & there, they'll create more awareness (which in turn I'd translate into better sales when the thing is finally released).

As for a z1 firmware update, it all really depends on what the z2 brings to the table. If all it does is unlock the hidden z1 features in a new form factor, well then I wouldn't expect a radical z1 firmware update. That would, after all, cannibalize z2 sales. On the other hand, if the z2 brings whole new features that can't physically or logically (in computer terms) work on the z1, then I'd expect to see a z1 firmware update unlocking some of those secret features.

Either MS is gearing up to wow or they've already given up on the Zune.

Wrong, anticipation of a new product means that people DONT want to buy the current product, hence slowing sales of v1 down.

True, but what kind of sales figures are the z1 pushing these days? I think in the end it's a balancing act with no sure outcome. You can really argue either way, depending on what marketing/tech strategy you choose to employ.

I'm just a little concerned that the lack of any substantial insight into the z2 may indicate a very real lack of anything to be excited about. Granted, I haven't seen ANY info on the z2 beyond the form factor and hdd capacities, but still...

Will MS "fix" the WiFi? Will they add game support? Do we even really WANT them to add game support? Podcasts? Streaming? Wireless syncing?

Cold fusion reactor?

It'd be nice to be thrown a bone (though I by no means would claim entitled to a 'bone' - fanboys that insist they are thusly entitled irritate me).

I'm not sure if you can make a comparison between v1 launch and v2 launch. v1 launch required a lot of things to come together and I would imagine a lot of final planning etc. But with v2, you already have the infrastructure in place. A firmware and hardware update is all that is needed and would be much easier.

I am one of the ones (call me gullible) that are hoping this rumor is true....

But I agree this whole thing will make or break the Zune for Microsoft.

If I get a z2 what will I do with my z1...could give it to family or opt to slap in the bigger hard drive in lieu of getting a z2 if firmware is going to be updated. The key thing all of us want to probably know what kind of specs is the z2 toting. Does it play other formats, raise people's libidos, rolls down stairs and over your neighbor's dog?

Granted I am being a little bit facetious but I think we would all like to know what specs are and Microsoft hasn't released a full disclosure of that yet. Could they be working in a 160gb hard drive one as well?

Well, the specs issue is what I'm getting at here, though I agree with ACE that at least from a h/w point of view things are easier this time around. Of course, that means that now there's really no excuse for a poor product.
