i went ahead and bout an adapter off ebay so i can mess with the files... if the fonts can be added this easily, something else is surely able to be done as well

If you wouldn't mind posting screens of the inside of the system partition that would be great (when you get the adapter). I'm interested to see what's in the system partition.

couldn't you just unlock the system partition in linux and then format it? by formatting it and resizing the partitions, you could *possibly* put rockbox on it. there has to be a way to format it. even if it involves a very strong magnet and some patience.
If you format it, it won't do anything until you connect it to the computer and put the firmware back on. The harddrive isn't what runs the Zune, it is mostly managed by its integrated hardware (sort of its version of BIOS). The hard part with hacking this using any method short of a chip mod, is that it has all this security built into the Zune device itself, beyond all the security/protection they put in the firmware.

Exactly in order to defeat the Zune "BIOS" you would need to install a modchip or do some soldering.

Since nobody beat me to it, it will be some time this weekend (ZuneTweekV1).
NOTE: it is a very limited hack. It will let you install the 4 TTC Asian font collections. It will let you revert to older versions of the official firmware. It will let you explore other exploits.
It won't let you run homebrew (at least not yet; hopefully someone will find an exploit to make it possible)

See the other discussion on doing the hard drive swap.
The built-in firmware will partition and format the two partitions for you (Eboot.bin and Recovery.bin in the Flash ROM). The other contents come from the PC (especially NK.bin, and optionally the 4 Asian font files).
Direct access to the system partition requires a hard drive swap (using a Video iPod or other compatible hardware). I recommend Mac OSX for the easiest access. For casual use/upgrade, use the upcoming software-only ZuneTweekV1
re: defeating the "BIOS" (more correctly called the boot loader, EBoot.bin)
So far we don't know how to get around the firmware security (a digital signature). Hopes are high that someone will find a font exploit.
I've done with the softwarical method to access system partition too.
Tested with some of korean zune users from sony clie user club in korea. (most of them, including me, buy zune from woot.com )
But, It's too messy. (need to run some kind of a web server, modified dns server, patch on zune software and It won't be a help cause I posted to my blog only in korean)
I've done it easily as ZunePet said though I never had tried this kind of work.

Even with the babelfish translation, it is very difficult to understand...
Can any Korean speaking member translate this into English?
edit: I have hired a translator, so I should have the English translation up by tomorrow morning! So all you non-Korean speaking, Chinese, Japanese, whoever you are, just hold on a little longer.
> IT FREGGIN WORKS...
Cool. I won't bother releasing my version (since they addressed my challenge).
I do it differently (not using DNS or CAB files), but give-or-take the number of steps involved, the results should be the same.
NOTE: the same approach can be used to create a potential font collection hack. That's where people should be spending their time.
