Default Add native AVI / MPG to Zune software!

Credit goes to KingJehu @ zunescene

The file below contains two registry hacks that add library & conversion support integrated into the official Zune software.

You need do nothing more than extract files (optionally reading the readme.txt) and double click the .reg files to install them. Press "Ok" when asked.

There is a file for AVI support as well as MPG support.

Any questions you may have should be directed to the author, but before doing so...you should have already read the "readme.txt" :winkle:!

Download it from here:

Just checked out ZuneScene's forums and they seem to be pretty happy about this file. This is great. Glad I don't have to use a different conversion software

Wait, does it convert the files, or does it just simply let it be added?

if it lets .avi and .mpg files be played on the Zune without any conversion..thats neat indeed!

First it recognizes the format.テつ*テつ*This then allows you to add the movie to sync and then it converts it. EDIT.. It does a ****ty job in converting it too.

The player cannot play .avi at this time.

That's been my experience so far. I drag/dropped the avi version of a SouthPark episode onto my Zune, and the Zune GUI doesn't recognize it. If added to sync it converts it, and the playback is horrible.

Thats because it's only adding the avi codec to your computer, not the actual Zune device. You would need a Zune avi codec for avi files to actually play on your device (without conversion).

I would stay away from this.

Hello All,
Being the author of the hack, it seems people need clarification as to what this hack does.

What is DOESN'T DO!
1. Does not add avi support to your zune device (the small square thing with the 3" screen). :-)
2. Does not modify how the zune software (the software on your pc) converts files.

What is DOES DO:
1. Allows the zune software (once again, that's the software on your pc) to "see" avi files and mpg files. And once it "sees" the file it can be added to your library.
2. Once the software "sees" the file and is added to your library, you can put those avi and mpg files into your sync list. And when you sync the zune software will sync/convert the avi and mpg files.

The crappy conversions have nothing to do with my hack. it's a problem with the zune software. Don't expection perfection, after all, I'm forcing the software to do something it wasn't designed to do.

I have noticed that Divx files convert nicely, but Xvid files convert badly

I applied the reg-keys and I have attempted to convert several DivX and XviD. It won't even convert any of them - it errors out saying that it can not convert it to the required codec. If the Zune cant really play them it doesnt matter, just letting you know.

It makes things look like ****, it doesn't allow them to drop down in size so they become horribly pixelized.

The url provided to download hack, gets 404 error. Can you post new location or send to me?

Thanks in advance,
