No other program can access the drive to do a recovery search on it, therefore, this is not an option or available to you, unless you crack open your zune and connect it like a normal HDD.

I don't believe that would work, either (at least not with the Zune 30 - I've tried it). I think the partition table only makes sense to the Zune firmware.

For some reason I had the Xbox HDD video in my head and though it would work. Your right, it doesn't. What was I thinking?

I'm not sure whether I'm hallucinating or not, but I remember reading about a commercial product that was designed to recover your lost music and such from a defunct Zune device. I'm not quite sure if this fits with what you're requesting, as I don't understand what you meant by "software or freeware", but I'll try to find it again if it really does exist.

Nice find!

You might want to confirm if they support the 3.x firmware, as they must be using some type of hack to get to the FS.

The reason I'm asking, because I used my Zune to back up my HDD prior to it's failure. After installing my new HDD, I synced my Zune not as guest (big mistake). I had no clue the Zune would not say something like "All data on your player will be deleted do want to proceed". My music can be replaced, but my vacations and family outings can't.
