Anyways, .mov files are not incompatible with the Zune 30, but it seems like the Zune will not play them as videos (just podcasts) no matter what.

this mod (having to cloak non zune file types in compatible formats) does not appeal to me... find a way to get normal disk use out of the zune through "My Computer" and I'm game.

There is an inaccuracy in your .pdf, the Zune CAN play .mp4s as videos. Go to:
Settings > Software > File Types
This works because I've gotten my .mp4s to play on my Zune.

And although the .mov was easily copied over to the Zune30, when I try to open the video I get the "This item is missing or cannot be played" message.
Same thing would happen if you tried playing a text document or an HTML file.

That makes no sense at all. You said "it's been a while", but regardless of how long it has been, you said that it worked with your Zune HD, which means that you were saying that it worked with the 4.1 firmware, since that is the earliest functional firmware available for the Zune HD. The 3.0 firmware update was somewhere around a year ago, long before we heard about the Zune HD.
