Default Zune USB Drive / *.avi conversion

My Setup.

-Zune 8G Version: 3.1(50)
-Zune Software Version: 3.1.620.0
-Windows 7 64bit

I followed the instruction below from Gadgets Cell Phones and Mp3 Players | Your Gadget so I could access my Zune like a USB drive.

1. Turn off the Zune software and unplug the Zune.

2. "Run" regedit.

3. Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\
(with Zune software v2 you may have to edit ……\ControlSet002\…..)

*I modified the registry information in both ControlSet001 and ControlSet002*

4. Look for “PortableDeviceNameSpace....”. It should be contained in theVid_045e&Pid_0710\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device. Parameters within this string …\USB\ The ##’s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Zune.

5. Change these values:
a. EnableLegacySupport to 1
b. PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0
c. ShowInShell to 1
After I had completed the above registry edit I rebooted my PC. Once I was back into Win7 I opened then closed the Zune Software and from "My Computer" I was able to access my Zune.

Here is were the Video conversion and the snag comes in. Hopefully someone here can figure out how to solve the snag.

I went through the file structure of the Zune and end up in one of its "3" Video Folders. Then I dragged and dropped an AVI file into that folder. To my surprise I was greeted with a pop-up to "convert or copy" the AVI file onto my Zune. I select convert and the conversion process started.

Here's where the snag comes in. When it is done converting and tries to copy the video over to the Zune I get the following message.
__________________________________________
| Cannot Copy vid.avi
|
| You do not have permission to create this item"
|
| ->Stop copying
| ->Skip file
|
| Cancel

This message happens with any file being transferred to the Zune.

So any suggestions?

This hack is no longer functional. Some have gotten read access, as you have, but anything 3.0 firmware and later will not allow write access.

Ah K, I read that on previous versions you could circumvent permissions while keeping the zune sync'd but if they've nerfed that in the new version then drats.

I haven't heard of a UMS hack for the Zune 3.x software (at least not yet).

libMTP (including Linux) allows for read and delete access, only. But you can't add or execute files.

Are you sure it allows delete access? Also, the read access should be limited to viewing the media contents, but not actually reading the media files themselves.

That's correct. You actually don't even had read access, it's more like "list" access. You can view the files, and delete them, but you cannot copy them or execute them. I have Ubuntu Jaunty and this is how my Zune functions within the OS.

Hm... That seem odd. A) I've never seen a video converter in windows and B) you'd think that a read/write access would be an easy thing to fix. But I supposed it can be difficult when it's on the device itself...

Sorry for the bump. =/

I meant built into windows. And actually is accessible. But then again, I haven't really explored Vista. And even less Windows 7.

Microsoft doesn't bundle a video converter (assuming you don't count Movie Maker).

As for the lack of read/write access, it's because of the proprietary MTPZ. Since it's closed source, it's a problem for developers to communicate with the Zune.

If that's what he meant, I agree. But I thought he was saying that there were no video converters for Windows.

That would just be silly.
