Default I'm New and have some q's about Zune + Linux

Hey all! I'm Djini and my 8gb zune is coming in the mail!
I was wondering a few things about using the zune with linux (ubuntu).

1. will the zune software work with wine?

2. Is it possibly to make it so that the zune is recognized as an external drive?

3. are there any open source alternatives to the zune software?

thanks,
Djini

I use the Zune Software on an XP VM guest, running under Virtualbox (my host system is Ubuntu Intrepid x64). The VM can communicate with my Zune 30, and syncing works just fine.

The only caveats with my setup are 1) The Zune software enhanced graphics mode doesn't work (which is expected behavior on a VM) and 2) I personally had issues trying to sync from a VirtBox shared folder that linked to my local host. In the end, I created a 30GB VirtBox hard disk file which I use as my "Zune drive" for syncing. It's a bit of a convoluted solution, but it works.

As mentioned, the Zune will not work at all on a non-Windows system. The Zune does a proprietary handshake with the Zune Software, to unlock the encrypted player and connect to it. LibMTP only works with older Zune firmware, and even then it's only read-only mode - you can't write to the Zune (I've already tried in various players, with no success).
