The equalizer is missing from the Zune 4/8/80 b/c the new Zunes don't include the necessary EQ hardware that the Zune 30 did. You're going to have to use an external EQ like what Justananomaly suggested or cope with the lack of EQ.

Huh, even my old 30GB unknown Philips mp3 player had an eq.
Also, isn't there any way to get a separate EQ with more, uh, options..?

The reason the Zune's don't have a EQ is to maximize battery, running an EQ is a battery drainer, the player has to run the music through it before you hear it...

yeah but couldn't they give us the option of turning it off or on? i think it may have been a space problem cuz the 80 is smaller then the 30...

The hardware in the 80 is suckier than in the 30. There is no EQ support hardware side on the new Zunes

I have a Zune 80 and the lack of an equaliser is stupid because the 'standard' sound is nothing like what it should be. I am listening to it for the first time, and the sound is totally different to on any computer or CD player. Namely, listening to the album "Intimacy" by Bloc Party, I can barely hear the vocals on the track "Ion Square", while on the track "Zephyrus" the drums about a third of the way in are almost completely absent, and on all tracks the fuzzy distortion is FAR too loud. This is nothing like the sound anywhere else I have listened to this album and so is clearly wrong, and ruining my listening experience because the mixing is clearly totally different to how the band intended (there is a reason why producers spend time mixing and mastering to get the vocals high and the 'cool noises' low in the mix!). Is there really nothing that can be done to sort out the sound? I can't cope with having to strain to hear vocals that are normally perfectly clear.

My music sounds fine here. Though I suggest you use other headphones other than the ones included with the 80. My $15 skullcandy blew away the zune's. The Zune's have some high treble/pitch, can't really explain it. I thought it was the lack of EQ as well at first.

I would love an equalizer hack, that's the one thing that keeps me going back to my ipod.

Since I'm the one listening to be honest I don't care what the intentions were it is always a good thing to have the ability to adjust the sound quality to a person individual taste. This is the sole reason I'm keeping my Zune 30 for yet another year and will be putting a bigger hard drive in it. |

There has to be a way to hack a software eq. The one thing I miss from my old Karma - a full 5 band parametric eq with three memories - I could set one for home listening, one for headphones and one for the car - Instant Karma!

It can't be done without adding hardware to the Zune which doesn't exist. Why this topic didn't get locked before, I'll never know. >_>
