Isnt there a way to just remove the hard drive and format it and install our own firmware? For example take the harddrive out of the zune and find a way to plug it in to your computer and then wipe the drive and then install rockbox for example? Because I cant wait for this to be done and Im waiting as patiently as possible :/

Because the firmware is locked down, the Zune will not run any firmware if it is not signed by Microsoft.

The one product from microsoft that isnt buggy is the one we want bugs in...go figure.
Has anyone tried to make a new firmware and rename all the files to what the filenames of the current firmware and then installing the firmware the same way you would downgrade the firmware?

there has already been more research to getting rockbox on a zune in the rockbox forums and they haven't had any luck due to the encryption with the firmware.
and the only ways i know of to flash the firmware completly is via the offical MS way or to physically remove the chip and flash it that way but TMK no one has done this caus you could just brick your zune

Has any thought been put into running the ipod firmware on the zune?
I heard about people taking HDD's from ipods and putting them in zunes. so maybe that could be a way. take the hdd from zune and put it in ipod, then try the codes and whatnot, and replace the hdd in zune. Any thoughts on how that would work? |

i think it has a second partrition or something like that in the zune so that the zune would not recognize the firmware even if u did it that way

The firmware is both on the hd and part of the firmware is on the flash. Everytime you upgrade your zunes firmware eboot.bin and recovery.bin are sent to the flash and then nk,eboot, and recovery are also stored on the hd. Each time the zune boots up the firmware from the flash chip checks for signatures in the firmware files on the hd, if it finds them it runs, if not it tells you to reinstall the firmware (Changing even one byte in the firmware files deletes the signature).
A lot of people expect the zune to be hacked when games come out, but theres a 99% chance that will not happen. With the implementation of XNA on the zune the security will be even greater, and with what it is now it could mean no hacking for a long time. Hope that cleared up a few questions.

The best way would just be tamper with the existing firmware.
