Default playing 640 by 480 videos on zune... Shutters a bit but getting close

ok, i got my zune to play a 640 by 480 hd video. The problem was the video was glitchy.
I did this by using the hd hack to just manually put it in there.

Now my xbox 360 did play the 640 by 480 with a 1745 bitrate video when i pluged the zune into it.

So, tomorrow i will try to get a 640 by 480 with a lower bitrate, something like 1200 or 1400 and see what happens. The good thing is we may be able to find a work around for television output.

I do not have a tv out cable, just my xbox 360 which does just uses the zune as a hd and processes the video internally. So, i will have to go pick one of those up soon to see how it works without using the 360.

I will be working a double shift tomorrow. I will be back sat evening or sunday morning.

I will keep you up to date on how it goes. please post if you found the limits of the zunes video processing.

Yea, I tried doing that a long time ago... the video 'skipped' a lot. Wasn't watchable..

Same here. Maybe it's because the Zune had to actively downsize it to fit on the 320x240 screen?

I think i'll try TV out and see how that works.

ok, im watching a wmv-hd rip right now via the xbox-360. So, at least you can use it as a portable hd on the xbox with hd videos.

the xbox will play 720p via usb to the zune no problem but cant handle 1080p.
the 720p video has a resolution of 1028 by 720 and a bitrate of 6433kbps.
The 1080p videos are 1440 by 1080 and have a bitrate of 8470kbps.

My portable hd can do it no problem, but the zune just cant seem to load it fast enough since the bitrate is so high.

And i will not even try to play this on the zune alone for fear that it will die, going from 320 to 1024 seems to be too much of a jump for me.

later.

Okay, well, I tried playing a 640 x 480 file via TV OUT, and it still lags.

So I guess it's simply that the Zune firmware wasn't designed with higher-def in mind for playback. : /

Oh Well.
Not like it's really a big deal.
I think you're the only guys that even care about that, haha.

I uploaded a 640 x 480 wmaHD file which was roughly almost 900 MB's to my Zune and it works perfectly. The only problem I seem to notice is when you fast foward the video it lags for around a second before moving.

Yes, but we have worked out the zune CAN play 640x480. And its not the size, whether 10mb or 10gigs. Its also the bitrate to take into account.

I have manage to play 640x480 with 900kb/s and managed without any lag.
I see this as an achieveemnt so far, but wish to improve it somehow.

WMA or WMV?

a wmvhd file will have a high bitrate. like about 3000kbps to show ture high def video. The prefered resolution is also about 1280 by 720. Same as 720p.

the best i have done so far is a 640 x 480 with a bitrate of 910. I encoded the same video and uped the bitrate until it started to skip. The max i could get was 910kbps.

I hope that its a software limitation and not a hardware.

I think he meant wmvHD.

I think it is a software limitation. The hardware should easily be capable. I can see 640x480 at 1000kb/s becoming the standard on the zune within the next 6 months due to updates in firmware.[br]Posted on: 06-01-2007, 18:15:42_________________________________________________N ow watching BORAT on my zune. 35minutes in No problems yet.
640 x 480 at 1210 kb/s

I think MS should at least offer higher resolution output through the xbox360 than 320x240, it should stop mandatory lower quality re-encoding. This would not benefit headphone jack video out users though because composite/Rca jacks are limited to 240-320 lines of horizontal display. Least of all less encoding time would make videos more enjoyable, and increase the storage aspects of the Zune.

I am not sure why the wma's are so controlled, I guess it must be less stable to output larger size video files. I would assume it drains battery power even more than usual when playing large files. Maybe the battery is the real problem.....big files=more playing energy=1.5 to 2 battery hours of video=useless video out quality on external screens.

Higher quaility does effect videos'. Your estimates are right, i watched Borat ( 1 hour 20mins) in 640 x 480, at over 1000kb/s, and it drained battery harshly, i didnt get time to charge before today, and only managed to watch on more episode of southpark before v. low battery.
