Default What are the capabilities of the graphics for the games?

Just a couple of quick questions, what are the capabilities of the graphics for zune games? What right now is the best game based on the graphics?

Gold Chase is probably the most graphically advanced game currently out there. It uses raycasting, a fast but limited 3D technique, and even that can be quite laggy if you push it any further than Gold Chase already does. The vast majority of games are 2D, and that's how it'll stay most likely.

To answer the first part of your questions, the Zune is limited to 2D rendering. This means, it has no graphics processor. All the rendering is done by the CPU. The XNA team changed and optimized the spritebatch class of the XNA framework to draw as quick as possible on the Zune. But the spritebatch is limited to 2dimensional pictures and text. Away from that you can do quite much on the Zune, even with these limitations. Basically you have access to any pixel on the screen, you are able to draw sprites, use spritesheets, use the most important blendeffects like adding and alphablending. You can rotate (but without antialiasing), scale, order, flip images horizontally/vertically, color images using a blendcolor and more. Shortly said the Zune (XNA Game Studio) can do everything you need to make 2D games.

And thanks to the previous posters to mention my games

They pretty much said it. One thing that I have found is greatly limited is the way you can create textures inside the games. There is a huge list SurfaceFormats, but when creating a new texture (texture = new Texture2D(GraphicsDevice, Window.ClientBounds.Width, Window.ClientBounds.Height, 1, textureUsage, surfaceFormat), the only SurfaceFormat that works is Color.

However, other than trying to port emulators, I have not come across much at all that I have needed to do that the Zune does not support.

That isn't that big of a deal, as you can convert any of the color formats to 4-byte ARGB format (the only SurfaceFormat it supports). However, that can be significantly less efficient compared to the other, more compact formats.

Zamp, anything you want to tell us?
We all know about the raycasting engine. But even this is 2D.

Looks like a real beta FPS for the zune using Raycast. doesnt look like you can do anything but walk around yet.

I know what it is, but its not new, nor is it in progress or something. Its a video made by SimReality and he has shown it earlier. I guess Zamp just wanted to show that the Zune can handle "3D" but it can't (hardware-ish), and I would like people to post a picture or video ADDING some words describing what intention they had to post it.

so there's no work being done on the raycasting engine? that blows... just makes me more glad i'm working on my own fake 3d technique.

The only release that uses the raycasting technique is my own GoldChase atm...
Unfortunately I don't know about other games in progress that use it
