Not True . By simplifying the process firmware has to go through to play songs/videos, you can lower the amount of thinking the device has to do which can increase the battery's life. Apple did this with a firmware update for the 5th gen iPod.

Default RE: What do YOU want in the next firmware?

After reading this thread, it seems that many of you want what is already in WinMobile5.ÂÂ*ÂÂ*I have WM5 on a Cingular 8125 and also have a Zune.ÂÂ*ÂÂ*Here's a daydream.ÂÂ*ÂÂ*If MSFT could do a mash up of both of those systems, taking the best from both, it'd best the alleged IPhone.ÂÂ*ÂÂ*(But that's a leap in hardware from where Zune is now.)

I want better support for Xbox 360 connectivity... i.e. - better resolution, fast forwarding, pausing, and rewinding support

1. I would like to see support for storing data files.
2. Support for creative commons licenses for zune sharing that doesn't expire.
3. Divx support.
4. DVD conversion to Zune video format.
5. Improved FM tuner reception.

No one has mentioned the one thing I want the most. Unicode support. My Eastern tastes require this kind of thing and I almost did not buy a Zune because it didn't have support for this. This is one of the easiest things to add, and it should definitely be in the next firmware update. There's no reason why it should not be.

Other than that...

1) Wifi Synchronization support would be nice, but not necessary.
2) Wider support of codecs, most definitely.
3) Less buggy Zune Marketplace software.
4) Mac support is a definite. I need this for my planned MacBook Pro purchase.
5) Bigger hard drive. Won't affect me now, but it would be nice.
6) Clock would indeed be cool. It's weird that there isn't one at all now that I think about it. Really odd.

4) True mass storage compliance for the HD
5) Video meta tags and playlist/categorizing exactly like the music
6) Support for more video codecs to cut down that slow transcoding
7) Delete files from the Zune device
8) Send Video's wirelessly
9) Sync Wirelessly
10) Ability to record from the FM radio...though the RIAA gets in the way here
11) Clock (since everyone wants yet another clock on their person)
12) Implement the DJ feature that was scrapped last minute (broadcasting your music to surrounding Zunes)
@ 10...

you know what Creative Zen said to the RIAA when they released the latest firmware?

NO CLOCKS!!!! By having something always running in the background the battery life be less.

I would like a power button, so i can turn it off so that its not in standby. Something like holding the middle button for 5 or 10 seconds.

Higher resolution for the video out. something like 640 by 480. Then we could at least get dvd resolution for the video out. Hell, even if i cant view it on the screen and it only worked on the video out it would be a giant leap forward.

Support for codecs, just make us install them on our own. That way microsoft isnt using it, but we are getting the functionality we want.

Drag and drop without having to do the reg edit.

Wireless connectivity, dont care about the internet. (could you imagine trying to type with 7 possible buttons? I want to be able to connect to my laptop and load the zune wirelessly. So, it can be connected to the 360 and charge while i load it from another room.

LET ME MODIFY THE META TAGS. You can click them and they highlight in the software, but you cant click hte edit button. Let me edit it.

Lets hope there is next firmware.
I don't listen to much music, I wanted the Zune for Podcasts and Video. BUT... it needs a better way to organize podcasts by source (Album?). In any case an easier way to put all the podcasts from a single source into a specific area. It treats a podcast like music, if you exit the file, it dosen't store where you stopped so you can go back to the same place next time and continue listening. Video files do, but not podcasts.
#1 Better Organization of material, and drag and drop between Albums or storage areas.
#2 Better Organization of Video Files, (VideoCasts), or even if you could put all the videos from a single source in their own areas, like albums in the music section. If you load up 30 megs of material, it sure gets hard sorting it all out unless some better method is provided in the next firmware.
#3 Let the user create file areas, as needed, Playlists are not working.

Love the hardware, but MicroSoft dropped the ball when it came to the software and firmware. Would like to see some light at the end of the tunnel that something will or is being done to improve organization of files.

I want customizable menus!! And also easier to move songs, pictures, and videos around. Like maybe move from folder to folder.

Gapless playback. Albums should sound like albums.

I want to have:
1. Outlook support, so that you can sync it with your zune, and the ability to check your email from your zune.
2. A clock.
3. MSN would be nice

All I want is-

1) More video codecs
2) No 3x3 rule on NON-DRM music (Without the HDD Hack). It's ok if you can't share DRM'd music forever but if it's from a CD I bought I should be able to "squirt" it to people permanetly.

I am thinking that the firmware will have to come out before January because that is when the Vista comes out.

I'd like to see:
  • Clock
  • Calender
  • That "guess the song" game like on the ipod
  • Ability to delete from the zune
  • Open WIFI
  • Ability to use the HD feature without regedit
  • Wider range of video format capabilities

1)I want to add in the ability to squirt to a pc.
2)The ability to squirt a song someone squirted to you.

Squirting just sounds so wrong. :-\
