Default First Firmware: 1.1

As of now, the first firmware seems to be version 1.1. I'll post it up for download when available!

I don't really know how to explain this very well, but here goes.

It's basically a mini-software on a portable device, that can be updated. So, if microsoft wanted to add another function in the Zune, they would update the firmware and pass it on to us. Then, the new function that they added will work on our zunes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware for the more confusing version..

Anyone want to explain better than me?

That's a pretty good explanation, I definitely couldn't do any better.

Firmware is like your BIOS. It is normally supplied on a chip that can the data can easily be changed on by flashing, or be changed by pulling it out and putting in a new one. Firmware is software on hardware bassicly, thus firmware.

well it's just because they have probably been producing the Zune device for at least a month now, and during that production time, MSFT has updated the firmware. It updates automatically when you plug it in for the first time.

That was a really great and easy to understand explanation. Anyways, I'm so thankful that you can update functions and such without necessarily having to buy a new Zune. That would be such a waste unless it's something that can't be added to the current version (hardware, etc) of Zune.

Yeah pal. I was going to say that it's pretty much the devices operating system. You know?

Close, firmware is like the 'software' in between the physical hardware and the operating system. Since the hardware of a Zune is never going to change (at least, not for a generation) firmware can also act as the operating system.

In a computer, firmware can be the same as a driver. Its the compatibility layer between your operating system and hardware. Its what allows a single piece of software (OS) to operate on an infinetly different number of computer configurations.

Think of it this way:
User > Application > Operating system > Firmware > Hardware
User asks and application to do something, application reports to the OS, OS uses the firmware to tell the hardware what to do.
