taken from the microsoft site:
SYMPTOMS You cannot update the software on a Zune device. Additionally, you may receive an error code. Back to the top THINGS TO TRY To troubleshoot the problem, follow these steps: 1. Restart the Zune device. To do this, set the Hold switch to the unlocked position, and then press and hold the Back button as you press the top of the Zune pad. Release the button when the Zune device begins to restart. 2. Disconnect the Zune device, restart the computer, and then connect the Zune device to the computer again. 3. Connect the Zune device directly to a USB port on the computer. Note Do not connect the Zune device to a USB hub. 4. Try to update the software on the Zune device again. You may succeed on the second try. more reading for you here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945278 |

This is how it went down for me an 1.5 hours ago.
I sat down grabbed my zune put in my earbuds turned it to a song, started WoW up, thought should charge it while i play, plug in the zune. The zune software opens up, my zune restarts, it shows the green circle with the 3 in it, then it says to update. There are no updates, i restarted software, there's an update it goes through but appears that as soon as it's about to start up it erases all the firmware. Rinse and repeat... I've tried everything. I'm using a Black 30gig zune that is almost a year old of use, i got it for xmas last year, i'm 100% sure there's a bug in the new firmware, the question is, is it fixable or does it turn your zune into a brick. *oh and i've been running the new layout since its been out, been syncing wirelessly etc, so it's been making me happier...now i'm ready crack skulls Last edited by armrest : 12-06-2007 at 07:47 PM. |

i got an idea.( but do at own risk!)
1.disconnect zune from computer 2.Hold the back and up buttons to restart it. 3.When its restarting,Hold the back, left, and middle buttons.(This should delete all content on you zune AND FIRMWARE! 4.Follow Instructions on you zune screen. ENJOY!

I would say you should uninstall the Zune software, reset your Zune (Clear it entirely, including the firmware), then install the Zune software again and try to update again.

I have the same problem. This is my second zune, the first one had the same problem so I sent it in and got a new one. This time every once and a while the zune would restart randomly and again with the new firmware the zune got messed up. So I will try sending this one back to microsoft and see if my third one works.
sorry if my english is kinda bad

Hmm, ok I've had the the same problem for about a month and all of a sudden it updated. As I was sitting here reading some other forums just playing around and repeatly updated and kept going through the error ect ect. And I guess it was the 8th time in a row i did it and it updated. Now it works just fine. I did reinstall the zune software, and also did the hard reset to the zune itself but the problem persisted for almost a month afterwards. I'm thinking its working by luck alone, but hopefully this will help someone out.

Yesterday my friend gave me his zune to check out because he received this error code. I tried everything on the forums to no avail. I disconnected my computer, downgraded the firmware, updated the firmware, reset the zune, hard reset the zune, nothing worked. As I was doing this I noticed every time I tried to install the update of the firmware and it wouldn't go through as everyone else has probably experienced, there was a little progress bar that would go almost half way and then it would go back to the screen saying to connect the zune and update. After updating a few times, I noticed the progress bar would get bigger and bigger. I started to actually measure it as it got closer to completing the bar which went from one side of the screen to the other. Then finally, it reached it and the zune was working. Gave it back to my friend, it was completely empty, but seemed to be working fine. So I guess if you install the update and even though it gives you the error code, its like every time you do it, a piece of the firmware is added. So all I can say is keep pressing the update button when your zune is connected and even hard reset it a couple times during the process. It seems the more you do it the better. Keep your eye on the progress bar.
By the way, if you don't know what progress bar I am talking about, it is the one that shows the zune symbol and there is a little bar under it. If you watch it as it tries to update, you'll see what I'm talking about. It'll show the zune symbol and you'll see the little progress bar move ever so slightly, but it moves. Do it enough the update and throw in a hard reset once in a while and hopefully that will work. Try it out, and if it works spread the word. |
