I'm having this problem (kinda exactly the same situation).
Thing is though, my Zune started working again after I deleted the firmware and re-installed it, but then it got messed up again. =[ I'm about to throw it against the wall. Hahaha.

I had my Zune 80 for less than a month before I started getting repetitive "Device Recovery Mode" cycles. Each time required multiple resets, erases, and firmware clearing as others have experienced.
The error code produced most often was C00D1249 with the occasional CD00D11CD. Eventually it would sync (40GB music) but after a few weeks of use I would be right back in Device Recovery Mode. After reading a post about C00D1249 linked to hard drive failure I decided to contact Microsoft Customer Support. I spent 50 min with "Level 1" tech support trying ALL the things posted on these (and other) forums. Then transferred to "Level 2" tech support, who was actually pretty cool - understood exactly what I was telling her and authorized a hard drive repair under warranty. She said "as terms of the warranty" I would receive a refurbished Zune 80. Great, I pay $250 for a Zune 80 and end up with a refurb! I brought up the fact that I purchased my Zune from Zune Originals with the custom engraving on the back (Kenzo Minami's "Kenzo 1"). She said they would likely stick my current backplate on a refurbished Zune 80 and call it good. Seeing little choice in the matter, I FedEx'd the broken zune (MS supplies you with a small box) and began the waiting game. 10 days later I receive an overnight package from FedEx with a brand new Zune 80 engraved with "Kenzo 1" in retail box!? Needless to say this was over and above what I expected from Microsoft customer service. The new Zune 80 works flawlessly. I admit I'm shocked at the whole experience. I'm no Microsoft fanboy but I have to give them credit for the way they handled this. ![]() |

what i did was (using the button combo) cleared the firmware and hard drive, uninstalled the zune software (it took about 6-7 times for it to work, so i had to be patient..) reinstalled the zune software, unlocked it using zAuto-Unlocker and now am currently syncing my 50gb of music back on in smaller increments.. trying to keep it around 50 albums a sync.. hell, it'll take a while, but it's better then nothing. the above will work (so far it has for me) but i have gotten tired of doing that, and am about to try to sync everything at once ![]() |

NOP, its a hardware issue, specifically the Hard drive, mine had 2 years working fine, today it fell to the floor and i started getting all these same symptoms, it all points to the harddrive failing, i know mine did cause its cause it was dropped, so lets see
You guys leave it charging or dont know WHAT could have happened while u were away from it and get X,Y,A Symptoms..... I let my working for long time zune drop on the floor prolly causing harddrive damage and i get X,Y,A symptoms and X,Y,A symptons point out how the zune is unable to copy the firmware, unable to complete the update on the progress bar..... it simply yells out HARD DRIVE FAILUREEEE, im buying one now just my 2 cents. |

d@mn that was the most frustrating thing ever. PS- NOW I HAVE TO SYNC MY ZUNE TO MY WHOLE LIBRARY. this is going to take hours. i have like 3000 songs, 10 vids and 1000 pics. UGH! Last edited by floridaqueen : 07-07-2008 at 02:02 AM. Reason: needed to |

Is this only on a certain batch of Zunes that were released recently? OR is it a problem with the new Firmware?
The Zune 80gb that I got the day it was release has never had this issue, but my other 80gb that i got last week has had this problem 3 times now! WTF? |

We had the same problem as many others and I was ready to give up on this. However this thread had something that actually worked (not on the MS Knowledge base site either). You do not have to do the hard reset (clearing all of the music and firmware off) to eventually get this to work.
I put a postit note on the screen to measure the progress bar as it attempted to update (marking it as it got a little further each time). It finally updated successfully (version 2.5) after attempting the update between 20-30 times. I'm still disappointed in Microsoft for causing this problem and for their lame instructions for getting past it. Thanks to all for your advice! ![]() |

![]() I feel so much better now that I don't have to buy a new zune or pay to get this one fixed. Oh and by the way it is a zune 30gb. |
