So I wanted to get an AC adapter so I could charge my Zune in situations where I didn't have my computer with me. I open it up, and it looks like there;s a piece missing. In the box. there's a thing that plugs into an AC outlet and has a USB port on it. What it's missing, it looks like, amounts to the charging/transfer cable that I already have (from when I bought my actual Zune.) Is the AC adapter supposed to come with another charging/transfer cable?

No.
Most aren't. Just buy one from eBay.

All told, that would be 43 dollars for a charging cable. As the great Will Smith said, AW HELL NAW.

Yeah, they don't include stuff they ought to
It's ridiculous how overpriced the official AC adapter and the v2 Zune Home A/V pack are. Which is why I got a generic charger with integrated Zune connector for $5 on eBay (works like a charm) and today I got lucky and won a v2 A/V pack (new Dock, AC adapter, remote and AV cable) for $24 shipped ![]()

I bought one from a company called Retrak or something to that effect at Fred Meyer's for $20. It was a dual car/wall charger, I absolutely love it, it helped me out alot when I was in the hospital. I was stupid and left behind my laptop so I had nothing to charge with, so I went to Fred Meyers and bought the charger lol. You should have just looked around, most name brand stuff is overpriced, and non-name brand stuff works just as well most the time.
