I got a $25 Altec-Lansing 3 piece setup from Wal-Mart. Just uses the headphone jack, and it works very well.

That brings up the bigger question of what kind of powered speakers are the best. It depends on how you want to use them. Do you want portable speakers, 2-piece that sit on a desk, three piece with subwoofer, 5.1 surround system, docking station, etc? In each category, you basically get what you pay for. Klipsch makes some great small powered speakers. Walmart stores sell the Phillips MMS321, a 2 piece that sounds as good as a subwoofer. SONY makes some cheap portable speakers that aren't too bad, but of course have less bass. In general, larger and more expensive means better bass. But even the cheap little portables have pretty clear sound.
