Hi,
I just bought a Zune 80 and now wondering whether it will hold up to physical activities like lawn mowing, running / jogging ? I know it's player with HDD instead of flash. Thanks in advance.

it should.. but in long terms, it can be dangerous since the hard drive can fail if it takes way too much shock.

Thanks. Does anyone know what the MTBF on the zune 80 HDD is ? A typical desktop's HDD's MTBF is around 9-11 years( they quote that in hours)...just wondering if would have designed it to take more shocks or only so much protection goes into a Z80's HDD as to a laptop HDD ?

not sure about that... and i'm pretty sure no one will be keeping a mp3 player for more than 5 years mainly... so no clue on that right now.. should be same as laptop HD's though...

I would recommend putting it in a case such as the ZuneOne silicone case. It will hold up doing yardwork just fine.

I use some kinda freebie 'sling" that hangs around my neck (I really am not to aggressive when it comes to yard work, but I do alot of it) I got a while back to wear mine in the yard and it works great. I tried the arm bands, but they slide down all the time. My concern is the screen itself really. How many other types of players do you hear about the hdd dying? It will be the screen first.

if it's as durable as the 30 it should be just fine, I keep my 30 in my pocket when I do lawn work and when I run so it should be fine for a good long time, get a good case still

I just used mine for the first time while lawnmowing. It worked great with no problems whatsoever. I also just ordered a silicone case because it drove me crazy having to reach in my pocket to change songs or the volume.

Silicon case does not protect the internal drive!
It can protect Zune from scratching, but that's about it. It is likely that it's going to die if you drop HDD mp3 on a hard floor whether it has a case on or not. Any shock or shaking can be critical, because ,inside a hard disk, magnetic disks are continuously spinning with a pointy reader. Even if it does not break right away, pieces came off from the disk spin together and constantly scratches it, and eventually it will be unusable. Of course you can do light activities like walking and lawn mowing, but running and jogging can seriously impact your Zune (doesn't matter if you have a case or not, the case does not protect it from shaking). Desktop HDDs generally go about 4~5 years depends on the usage, and it does not have any protection against shocks. MP3 HDDs supposedly have less lifespan because of its size and no cooling. However, it can live pretty long because it can endure small shocks, and its main usage does not require heavy writing. In short, Zune(30GB and 80GB) is vulnerable though you can do light physical activities at your own risk. Last edited by completing : 04-26-2008 at 06:30 PM. |
