Unhappy Random freezing/shut-offs.

VERSION OF ZUNE
======================
Zune 80.

VERSION OF ZUNE SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE
=====================================
The versions of both are 2.3, the software/firmware being the latest release.

OPERATING SYSTEM
======================
Microsoft Windows XP SP2;
A clean install, from a completely formatted disc, with nothing on it other than .NET Framework, the few XP patches and the Zune software (nothing more than is required to run the software).

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
=======================
It seems that Zune shuts off mid-song at random intervals. Usually it doesn't let me listen for more than a half hour (it can be longer) before frustrating me and shutting down. It doesn't shut down like a manual shut down, the screen freezes for a second and then goes black, after which point holding the play button brings it to the Zune booting screen (with the progress bar).
It may happen while watching videos too, but it hasn't so far (once with a podcast though, I think) and I've watched videos for quite a bit longer without it shutting off.

At first I read up about the static thing, and I thought that it could be the sunglasses pouch that I keep it in, as it's made of some weird, vinyl-y material (I have no idea what causes static). But that didn't work as listening to it without a cover (on a bedsheet) still caused it to shut off.

In an attempt to fix the problem, I reformatted the partition I specifically created for the Zune and reinstalled XP, Service Pack 2, the small hotfixes and most importantly the Zune software (which is a real bitch to install, even on a fresh XP). I also reformatted the Zune by holding the buttons and making it completely fresh.
I then transferred all of my music back on, but I was right back at the start.

THINGS ATTEMPTED SO FAR
===========================
Completely wiping the Zune (hard reformat) and XP (disc reformat), reinstalling and retransferring everything.
Using the player without the vinyl pouch.
Before that I drained the battery but I haven't done it on this (second) run.

HAVE YOU SEARCHED ONLINE/ZUNEBOARDS TO FIND A SOLUTION?
================================================== ========
Yes, but none of the questions seem to relate to my problem.

HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY ERROR MESSAGES?
========================================
Nope, apart from the 'Zune logo + progress bar' screen that takes 5-10 seconds after I boot it up after it's frozen-crashed on me.

NOTES
====================
Please keep in mind that living in Australia, the last thing in the world that I would want to do is send it back to the US, as it would not only severely piss me off but take lots of money, time and effort.

First of all, you can only send a Zune in for repair from the US. When you say hard reformat, did you wipe the firmware also?

Try doing a hard reset, that deleted the firmware and content.

Yeah, deleted both. I did the button combo.

I have trustworthy people in the US, I could get it fixed, but the time and effort is just too much.

i have this same problem right now, and I don't know how to fix it. I deleted everything off my zune including the firmware and I tried off clean from the start, but it still happens. mostly happens with the videos for me though, although it does happen with the songs, Zuneboards isn't giving me any help right about now.

It seams to be a static problem, try putting the Zune in a case.

Static electricity can come from nearly anywhere. Ask your parents if they recently switched laundry soap.

Maybe you should call 877-GET-ZUNE and ask them for help.
