Default Is a Zune right for me?

Ok so I've been looking for a multimedia device lately. Tried a few, returned them all. I am considering getting a Zune 4gb. But, I have a few questions.
1. Is it durable? This is my main problem with devices. will it last more than a week. will the screen scratch easily or break, or is it strong enough to hold up a few years?
2. Is the software that it comes with compatible with my 2002(Yes I know It's old, but I'm cheap) Windows XP? I returned an mp4 player just yesterday because the damn videos wouldn't convert to the needed format. I think it said something about a mp4 codec that I needed.
3. does the battery last long or will I be charging it every day? I use my current mp3 for about 4 hours a day.
4. Can I play mp4s and mov files easily? These are mainly the two video formats that I use.
5. Finally does it have a digital recorder? This isn't something that I consider a necessity but it's a nice feature I would like to have.

More than a week yes, screen wont scratch easily due to the screen being made of glass. And yes it is strong enough to hold up for a few years one reason is because it's a flash drive zune and flash drives last longer. Also because the body is scratch resistant. Plus zunes got a reputation for being strong and durable.

2. Is the software that it comes with compatible with my 2002(Yes I know It's old, but I'm cheap) Windows XP? I returned an mp4 player just yesterday because the damn videos wouldn't convert to the needed format. I think it said something about a mp4 codec that I needed.

I have no clue..sorry

3. does the battery last long or will I be charging it every day? I use my current mp3 for about 4 hours a day.

Yes in my honest opinion I think it will last more than 4 hours. One thing you can do though to help conserve more battery when/if you get the 4gb flash zune. Is..

Turn off the wireless, this eats the zunes battery alot.
Change the backlight setting to either 15 seconds or lower.
And make the brightness on your zune to either medium or low.

4. Can I play mp4s and mov files easily? These are mainly the two video formats that I use.

Mp4's = Yes
Mov = No clue..

5. Finally does it have a digital recorder? This isn't something that I consider a necessity but it's a nice feature I would like to have.

Nope

well lets say that it isn't compatible with my computer because its so old. will I be able to go to a friends house who has the software installed and sync my music to it without syncing his? And then lets say that I eventually get a computer that does have compatability and I want to add more. Will I have to delete all my music and sync it again(like stupid apple and their Ipods)?

Yes just that when you sync your zune with your friends computer/software choose the option to sync it as guest. After doing so you'll be able to sync his music on your zune, and your music to his software. Also vids, pictures, podcasts aswell.

And then lets say that I eventually get a computer that does have compatability and I want to add more. Will I have to delete all my music and sync it again(like stupid apple and their Ipods)?[/quote]

Do you mean delete all the music off your zune to add more songs from your "new" computer??

Yes, I don't want to have to delete my songs and add them in again just because I'm on a new computer.

Having a Zune is drinking a cold smoothie

You'll get brain freeze, but it's worth it in the end

All second generation Zunes natively support the MP4 format. The only player that needs to have these formats converted is the original Zune 30.

That explains why I have to keep converting all my .mp4 video's when I sync up my 30 gig...

Yes. It is said that it "supports" it, but that's only because the software converts it to .wmv ( I believe) before syncing it. In fact, if you take that same video off of your Zune after syncing it'll be in a different format because it's been converted. I would do this if I were you so that you could categorize all of your videos. I read somewhere about replacing the video with it's converted counterpart. Microsoft left this out (categories) for .mp4 videos, among other key features, so those who use this format must convert, or create complex titles just to have some organization to their video section.

You should be just fine with a Zune. However, the fact that you use .mov files is a point of concern. I don't know if the Zune can play those files. Anyway, there are better formats to use.

Ooh wow $105!!! Good job on getting a price like that. The only time I ever see a zune 4 at that price is when someone is selling a stolen one... But yeah good to hear you chose the zune hope you enjoy it! Especially at the price your buying yours for..I don't see why you wouldn't.

Well someone beat me to it. The 105 one is no longer available. Guess I'll just have to wait for another cheap one.
