Default "this item is missing or can't be played"

I was happy with my Zune for the first few days when suddenly while I was checking the quality of a movie I just converted, I got the error "This item is missing or can't be played". I tried re-syncing, re-starting the device, deleting the file and re-encoding it. Nothing worked. It's just this one file, but I'm afraid it's not gonna stop there.

Even more alarming, a quick google search for this error revealed that there are a LOT of people out there getting this error, some can't even play any of their songs anymore.

I'm quite concerned about this and hope someone knows why this is happening or that Microsoft are working on a new firmware that fixes this.

P.S I am using latest firmware, and the encoded file is an MP4 encoded with Videora. Another file I encoded with Videora seems to work fine.

You will need to do a hard reset of the device, then resync all content.

So you're saying I have to clean out my device and everything I put in it because I get an error on one file?

Oh dear, that doesn't sound like a solution I can count on often even if it does work.

I'm going to wait and see if I can possibly get a few more replies here from people who've encountered the problem and maybe got around it.

Appreciate your time.

I'm guessing that there must be multiple causes for this error. I've received it several times, but only on videos in the .mp4 format. After re-converting them they played fine. I used the same exact files for my iPod, which also plays .mp4 files and had no problem with the files so I believe it is a Zune issue and maybe not the file itself. Some people have received the error for audio files, though. Re-syncing did nothing for me at all, but there must be more than one reason for the error because it has helped some users.

Are you running as Administrator? Some files cannot be accessed without the right controls which can cause them to be "missing."
