Well, I got my hands on my Zune 80 about a week ago, and oddly enough, it keeps resetting on me at random times while playing music. It's not the files themselves, ie: I've played them after it restarted and they were fine... so what could it be?
At first, I thought it didn't like riding in my truck, but nope... shuts off when just sitting at home too.

My Zune 30 used to do that due to the static electricity, and I read other reports of the same thing. Could it just be that?

Nah... it's not even touching metal (or me) when it happens.

Considering that you are from Pennsylvania, it is highly possible that its because of static electricity. Is it brushing on anything when you're listening to it? BTW, your headphones can't even brush on anything either.

I don't understand what my Geographical location has to do with it, but ok, lol.
Nope, it's in a plastic cup holder in my car when I'm listening to it. The cord runs up my dash and into my stereo without touching a thing.

Well, with winter coming, it can get really dry and cold (perfect for static electricity)n certain parts of the US.

my 80 does it too. called microsoft and talked to a couple people for about an hour and a half. they dont really know why its happening. the guy told me its either due to a firmware issue or that the battery surges and the device shuts down to protect itself.
its really annoying. the best thing for you, and everyone else with this problem to do is to call microsoft zune help and tell them whats happening |

My 80 Gig zune restarts after playing 2-3 mp3's, but does not restart when in radio mode, or when playing one very long mp3.
I read on another forum that they called Zune support line and were told that random restarting can be caused by syncing and powering your zune through the USB port on the front of your pc, as opposed to the USb port in the back of your PC. To counteract this, you should delete everything from your Zune, play it until it drains, and then sync and power up the Zune through the USB on the back. I havent had a chance to test this out yet because Im at work, but I did manage to drain the batter by putting it in screen always on mode and putting it to play the radio. I will try and let you know if this helps. Robb4248, did you sync and power your Zune through the USB on the front of your pc? |

I got my Zune 80G at Christmas and it has been randomly restarting also. I tried erasing and resyncing and it still does it. I let my Z80G die and recharged it over night and it still does it.
Has there been any updates on this issue? |

I had a faulty Zune 80 that reboots and it looks like there will be no fix for it for a long time, if ever. Take your Zune back and get a different one. You will be happy you did. Living with the rebooting was hell.

I have the exact same problem, the zune turns off during a song, and i have to turn it on again, and it boots up. The issue I have is that I bought the Zune 80 of eBay UK (as i live in the UK, and Zunes are not available) what the hell can i do?!?

Often a full reset
To do a full reset, drain the battery until the zune no longer starts up. Meaning making the zune look if it's completely broken. Hook the zune up to a computer to charge. Wait for the zune to charge to a point where the zune starts up. Reset the firmware at that point. Last edited by jackluo923 : 03-19-2008 at 02:51 PM.

You do not need to drain the battery to do a hard reset.
Hold back and up to restart, while the device is starting up do the following: Quote:

I know, back + up is a restart.
A full reset deletes the firmware and content. No Zune key combo. requires you wait for the battery to drain.

The process of getting rid of the firmware is actually soft reset. The firmware is part of the software which runs the hardware. The process which requires the drainage of the battery is a true hard reset. This process does not touch the software apart, but only resets the hardware. Due to the loss of power, the values recorded on the zune's hardware returns to factory default values. My method of solving the restarting problem is doing both the Hard reset (draining the battery) + soft reset ( reloading the firmware). Sometimes a soft reset doesn't solve everything because the "error" is still stored in the hardware and reloading the firmware doesn't reset those errors. The whole process of doing a hard reset and soft reset should be called full reset instead. Clearing the data from the zune should be called "quick format" which only clears the directory of the data, not the data itself. Last edited by jackluo923 : 03-19-2008 at 02:53 PM.

So you made up the term full reset?
A hard reset is not draining the battery, it is deleting the firmware and content, then reloading it via the Zune Software.

Definition of hard reset: to reset a piece of a group of hardware
Definition of soft reset: to reset a piece of a group of software So by draining the battery, the hardware in the zune will reset. So by reloading the firmware, the software or the OS of in the zune will reset or replaced. Draining the battery method of resetting the hardware should be called hard reset and your method of reloading the firmware should be soft reset. The two method combined should be called full reset. Edit: I didn't say draining the zune's battery is called hard reset. The result of draining the battery (clearing the values of the hardware) is suppose to be called hard reset hense the name "Hard (hardware) reset" Last edited by jackluo923 : 03-19-2008 at 02:55 PM.

Actually, you just edited the above post.
Anyway, lets stop discussing this reset thing.
